A car backed up and hit Hall’s Croft, the historical home of William Shakespeare’s daughter, in Stratford-upon-Avon. The listed property as Grade I was already undergoing restoration and now needs new donations

An unexpected accident damaged Hall’s Croft, the historic home of Susanna Hall (1583–1649), daughter of William Shakespeare (1564–1616), in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. The listed property as Grade I was struck by a car that backed up and broke part of the facade. Now, the responsible institution is asking for donations to restore the location.

The incident occurred on Friday, the 17th, according to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the organization that manages the building. The house was already undergoing restoration, but the accident will require more extensive repairs.

“No One Was Hurt,” Says The Institution

In a statement released on social media, the organization reported that a vehicle “backed up accidentally towards Hall’s Croft, causing damage to the building listed as Grade I.” The note also highlighted that the most important thing is that “no one was hurt.”

The technical team isolated the area and began assessing the damage with conservation specialists.

The text adds that rising costs and the lack of qualified professionals hinder the preservation of old buildings.

Additionally, the statement makes a public appeal: “If you love Shakespeare and his legacy, please help us repair and preserve Hall’s Croft for future generations.

The Former Home of Susanna Hall

Hall’s Croft was the home of Susanna and her husband between 1613 and 1616. At the time, the property was smaller, but the gardens were extensive, with a garden, pigsty, and even space for cows and goats.

As was common in the 17th century, the kitchen was separated from the main house to reduce the risk of fires.

After the family moved out, the property remained unoccupied for more than a decade. In 1850, it served as a boarding school. In 1949, it was purchased by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and opened to the public two years later.
