Nonetheless, the piece was sold at an online auction for US$ 175 thousand (about R$ 700 thousand at current exchange rates), enough to help the family overcome financial difficulties and prevent them from losing their home.

More than just a paper artifact, the first Superman comic represents the birth of the superhero genre.
Published in June 1938, the title Action Comics #1 kicked off the so-called Golden Age of comics and introduced the world to reporter Clark Kent and his alter ego, the Man of Steel.
The iconic cover, featuring Superman lifting a green car, became one of the most recognized symbols in pop culture.
For this reason, even damaged copies continue to fetch small fortunes.
For comparison, a flawless copy was sold in 2024 for around US$ 6 million, reinforcing its status as the “Holy Grail of comics.”

The importance of the find goes beyond financial value.
The magazine symbolizes the beginning of a billion-dollar industry that transformed global entertainment, influencing film, literature, and mass culture.
Since then, Superman has become a timeless icon of justice and hope.
Other rare comics, such as Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27 (1939), also reach million-dollar figures but still trail Action Comics #1 in historical value.
Modern editions, like Spider-Man’s debut, have even surpassed the R$ 6 million mark in recent auctions, showing that the interest in collectibles remains high.
Curiosities And Legacy Of The Find
The copy found by Gonzalez was graded at 1.5 on a scale of 10 due to the tear on the cover. Still, the case drew international attention.
Interestingly, the comic used as a reference for grading belonged to actor Nicolas Cage, known for his passion for comics.
Cage’s copy, which had been stolen in 2000 and recovered years later, was sold for US$ 2.1 million in 2011.
Even damaged, Gonzalez’s Action Comics #1 changed the family’s destiny, allowing them to pay off debts and renovate the house with the raised funds.
The find also reignited interest among other collectors dreaming of uncovering hidden relics in renovations and attics around the world.
