If Realized, The Investment for Building a Plant in The Port and Industrial Complex of Pecém Will Be The Second Largest Private Investment in The History of Ceará
The Australian multinational Enegix Energy, focused on renewable energy, signed a billion-dollar memorandum of understanding with the government of Ceará to build a green hydrogen (H2V) production plant in the Port and Industrial Complex of Pecém (Cipp). The plant anticipates an investment of US$ 5.4 billion – equivalent to about R$ 28 billion.

According to the Secretary of Economic Development and Labor, Maia Júnior, the construction of the plant is expected to last between three and four years after the presentation and approval of the project’s licenses. However, there is currently no forecast for the delivery date of the environmental and operational projects by Enegix Energy.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.

A working group will also be created to develop public policies for renewable energy and to promote sustainable development in order to create a green hydrogen hub in the State. The initiative will have the support of the Federation of Industries of Ceará (Fiec) and UFC.
“The project aims at renewable energy production and represents the elimination of CO2. It is an extremely important action, not only economically but also technologically,” said UFC rector Cândido Albuquerque.
According to the head of Sedet, Maia Júnior, Ceará will be aligned with “an economy focused on the environment and will provide cearenses not only wealth but above all job opportunities in the State.”
Renewable fuel can help reduce net carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in energy-intensive and hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as steel, chemicals, long-distance transportation, shipping, and aviation.
Green Kerosene Plant in Ceará
In addition to the green hydrogen plant, Ceará is seeking partners to fund a project for the production of so-called “green kerosene.” The unit will be implemented at the Fortaleza Airport.
According to the Executive Secretary of Commerce, Services, and Innovation of the Secretary of Economic Development and Labor (Sedet), Júlio Cavalcante, there are ongoing negotiations with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Germany) and with a Ceará engineer with projects in the field. The discussions are being resumed after the “pause” caused by the pandemic.
