Full Parking Lots With Tesla Models Show Record Accumulation Of Electrics And Indicate Serious Operational And Commercial Risks For The Manufacturer

A curious and concerning phenomenon has been recorded since April 2025 in several regions of the United States: hundreds of Cybertrucks parked in abandoned locations.

These vehicles, all from the Tesla brand, remain stationary, without commercial use, without owners, and with no delivery forecast.

The most emblematic scene occurs in Farmington Hills, a city located in the state of Michigan. There, an empty parking lot has transformed into an improvised graveyard of electrics.

According to local records, the space previously housed the Barnes & Noble bookstore, but today it is occupied by dozens of unsold units of the futuristic vehicle from Elon Musk.

Sign Of Decline In Sales And Market Changes

The current scenario exposes a difficulty that Tesla has been increasingly facing: accumulated inventories and sales below expectations.

According to data revealed in May 2025, only between 6,400 and 7,100 units of the Cybertruck were delivered in the first quarter of this year.

In comparison, in the previous quarter, the company had sold about 13,000 vehicles of the same model.

This abrupt reduction in deliveries opened the door for Ford to regain leadership among electric pickups with its F-150 Lightning.

Tesla Has Already Turned To Vacant Lots And Abandoned Yards

The use of alternative and even irregular locations to store vehicles is not new in Tesla’s strategies.

In various parts of the United States, the company has occupied shopping mall parking lots, vacant lots, and the parking areas of closed businesses.

The internal justification would be to avoid expensive rents for logistics yards and keep vehicles “in public visibility”, but the practice raises criticism.

The parking lot in Michigan, for instance, is less than two kilometers from the nearest Tesla store, which opened at the end of 2024.

However, according to municipal authorities, the use of the space is not authorized for large-scale vehicle storage.

The city of Farmington Hills has notified the property owner and is in the process of formal inspection, as reported by the city’s planning director.

Illegal Practice Could Become A Headache For The Manufacturer

The case in Farmington Hills could turn into a negative landmark in Tesla’s public image.

This is because the accumulation of cars in inappropriate locations has been recorded since March 2025, in different parts of the country, without a clear stance from the company.

In addition to harming the brand’s reputation, the practice could lead to fines, embargoes, and demands for immediate removal of vehicles, according to urban and environmental usage regulations.

Industry experts warn that Tesla needs to rethink its logistics chain and its distribution planning, especially in times of global slowdown.

The demand for electric vehicles has grown less than expected in the first semester, primarily due to rising interest rates and decreasing government subsidies.

Situation Reflects Competitive Pressure In The Electric Sector

Despite still being one of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in the world, Tesla faces increasing competition from Chinese and traditional brands.

Companies like BYD, Rivian, General Motors, and Ford have expanded their offerings and heavily invested in more affordable models with greater range.

Moreover, the arrival of new federal incentives to competitors has diminished Tesla’s competitive margin in the United States.

With the Cybertruck being positioned as a premium vehicle, the higher price range has also deterred consumers, according to analysis from American consultancy Edmunds.

What To Expect In The Coming Months?

The second half of 2025 will be crucial for Tesla. The company will need to resolve accumulated inventories, reorganize its distribution chain, and deal with public pressure.

If municipal actions result in restrictions, the brand may need to relocate hundreds of vehicles in record time, causing logistical and reputational losses.

At the same time, experts argue that Tesla needs to revise its production planning and more accurately align supply and demand.

Meanwhile, the full and forgotten parking lots continue to draw attention — and cause strangeness.

After all, what company leaves its state-of-the-art vehicles exposed to the elements, away from consumers, in places that look more like clandestine dumps?
