Who Can Apply for the Tax Exemption?
The exemption is valid for the year 2024, but it is important to remember that the request must have been made in 2023. In 2023, the legislation granted the exemption to 2,200 properties in the city. If you are from Taubaté and did not apply for the exemption for 2024, do not worry. You can still prepare to apply for the exemption for 2025. Keep an eye on the deadlines, and as soon as they are announced, go to the Tax Office at the City Hall to collect the list of necessary documents.
Let’s get to the details. Who is entitled to this exemption? Check out the list of criteria that the legislation requires:
Retirees or pensioners with an individual or joint gross monthly income within the limits established by the welfare system, and who are owners and residents of a dwelling in Taubaté.
Owners of properties exclusively provided for use by the municipality, state, or federal government, or designated as historical heritage by a competent authority.
Veterans of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, participants of the 1932 Revolution and peacekeeping missions (blue helmets), provided they are owners of a dwelling that serves as their primary residence, as well as their widows.
Widows, legally separated, divorced, and single women over 50 years old, owners of a dwelling that is their primary residence and with a gross monthly income of up to twice the minimum wage.
Owners of dwellings with popular or rustic characteristics, with a built area of up to 70m² and land of up to 300m², with a gross monthly income of up to two minimum wages.
People with physical disabilities who own a dwelling that is their primary residence.
And Why Do We Pay IPTU?
Well, the IPTU is not just a whim of the government to take our money. This tax is used to improve the areas where the properties are located. The money collected goes to infrastructure projects, such as parks, streets, and roads, in addition to investments in essential areas like education, health, and public safety.
So if you are in Taubaté and fit any of the mentioned criteria, don’t waste time! Apply for your exemption and say goodbye to IPTU. After all, there’s nothing better than having extra money in your pocket for 2025, right?
This is the End of IPTU for some, but who knows, in the future, we might see this exemption extend to more people? In the meantime, residents of Taubaté can celebrate!
