China and Turkey are collaborating on the impressive achievement of an ultra-fast metro in Istanbul, completed in a record time of just six months. This remarkable feat, which marks the first initiative of its kind in Istanbul, sets a new global standard in the speed of metro system construction.
US Experts Consider New Record Impossible
It is important to highlight that, under normal conditions, the delivery of metro construction projects takes about 18 to 24 months, or approximately 1.5 to 2 years. However, the Chinese company, in partnership with Turkey, completed the project in just six months, less than half the standard time.
When news of the project’s completion reached the US, there was great surprise and American experts deemed this an impossible feat and raised doubts about the legitimacy of the Chinese company’s actions, calling for an inspection of the Turkish metro. Turkish officials responded with laughter on social media, questioning their relationship with Chinese infrastructure and emphasizing that China’s metro construction technology is advanced.

Turkish Government Faced Challenges Due To Absence Of A Metro System
Currently, Istanbul is one of the major tourist cities in the country, comparable to Nanjing and Shanghai in China, as well as other large cities from the 6th century BC. Previously known as Byzantium for its attractive environment and developed economy, Istanbul has always been a popular destination for travelers. Despite the high annual passenger flow at its airport, several tourists daily complain about the lack of convenient transportation to tourist attractions in the urban area.
The Turkish government faced a persistent challenge with the lack of an efficient metro system. The country’s Minister of Transport was inspired to build an urban metro after witnessing the success of this mode of transport in China. However, due to Turkey’s limited economic development compared to other international economies and its relatively outdated infrastructure, the government had to submit the metro construction to a bidding process.
Understand Why Turkey Chose China
Despite the interest in building the metro, several countries rejected Turkey’s proposal as they were unfamiliar with the conditions of the roads in Turkey, and engineering teams hesitated to perform inspections on-site. China, on the other hand, showed readiness to help, and the Chinese company CRRC Jujo Machinery Company Limited took responsibility for the metro project.
Even though the Turks sought assistance from US and Japanese metro experts, these experts considered the project impossible upon seeing the country’s situation. Istanbul, being the most developed tourist city, faces a significant daily influx of people.
Thus, building a metro in the city would involve traversing two busy commercial districts, handling 990,000 people per hour, and ensuring that the metro could withstand an earthquake of magnitude 9.9. These challenging conditions were deemed impractical by the US and Japan.
