Swedish Researchers Developed a Feed Additive Capable of Drastically Reducing Cattle Methane Emissions

Methane is one of the most potent and dangerous greenhouse gases for the climate. It has a 28 times greater impact than carbon dioxide over 100 years and is responsible for about 30% of the increase in global temperature.

With the world surpassing the 1.5 °C warming limit in 2024, reducing emissions has become a global priority.

Agteria Biotech

The Swedish startup Agteria Biotech is focused on an innovative solution to combat methane emissions from livestock, one of the main emitting sectors of this gas.

Its goal is to reduce 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is a significant impact for mitigating global warming.

To drive this mission, the company managed to raise € 6 million in a funding round led by Industrifonden and AgriZeroNZ.

The funding also received support from Norrsken Launcher and Mudcake. This investment will allow Agteria’s technology to advance in regulation and become commercially available.

Livestock and the Methane Challenge

Cattle are one of the major sources of methane emissions due to the digestive process, primarily enteric fermentation. This sector accounts for about 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a critical point in the fight against climate change.

To tackle this problem, Agteria Biotech developed a patented molecule that drastically reduces methane emissions from cattle. The innovation stands out in three main aspects:

  • High Effectiveness: In vivo tests have already demonstrated significant reductions in methane emissions.
  • Scalability: The technology is designed to be applied on a large scale in both dairy and beef cattle production.
  • Economic Viability: The cost-benefit is one of the best on the market, offering efficient reduction per euro invested.

The combination of these factors makes the solution promising for farmers, animal feed manufacturers, and the entire production chain of the sector.

Path to Regulation

The next big step for Agteria is to obtain regulatory approval to ensure the solution’s safety. This process involves rigorous studies to validate its effectiveness and confirm that there are no negative impacts on animals, consumers, or the environment.

The newly acquired investments will allow for acceleration of this step, ensuring that the technology is available for large-scale adoption in the shortest possible time.

A Decisive Step in the Fight Against Global Warming

Reducing methane is one of the most impactful strategies to combat climate change in the short term.

Initiatives like Agteria Biotech’s demonstrate that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, paving the way for a more efficient livestock industry and a more environmentally secure future.
