Discover Everything About the Chevrolet Onix: Safety, Economy, Versions, and Whether It’s Worth Buying New or Used and How It May Threaten the HB20
Launched in 2012 as a 2013 model, the Chevrolet Onix quickly established itself as one of the best-selling cars in Brazil. Produced at the plant in Gravataí, Rio Grande do Sul, the Chevrolet Onix brought with it a significant change in GM’s line-up, replacing models like the Celta and Corsa with a more refined and modern proposal.
Versions and Prices of the Chevrolet Onix
Since its launch, the Onix has undergone several evolutions. The current generation, launched in 2019, uses the GEM (Global Emerging Markets) platform, developed for global markets and focused on safety. The 2020 Onix received five stars in the Latin NCAP tests of the time, thanks to a sturdy structure and six airbags as standard. However, with changes in safety protocols, this rating could be different today.
Currently, the Chevrolet Onix is available in several versions, with prices ranging from R$ 85.000 for the entry-level version to R$ 113.000 for the Premier version. There are options with naturally aspirated and turbo engines, as well as manual and automatic gearboxes.

The 2012 Mitsubishi Pajero Dakar diesel shows 314,000 km and still draws attention for its reputation for durability; the seven-seater 4×4 SUV handles trails, but signs of severe use may conceal losses for used car buyers.
-
Peugeot publicly acknowledged the errors of the PureTech engine, which caused serious failures in hundreds of thousands of cars, and introduced the new Turbo 100 as a definitive solution, a 1.2 turbo tested for over 3 million kilometers that replaces the faulty belt with a more durable chain.
-
Automatic cars become ‘cheap’ in Brazil, and models from Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, and Honda appear for R$ 65,000 with up to 120 hp, CVT transmission, 482 liters of trunk space, keyless entry, and six airbags to tackle traffic without a clutch.

Honda revives a classic from Brazilian streets with a new name, TFT panel, and reprogrammed engine in the 2027 lineup; see the first impressions of the CB500 Hornet, which arrives with 49.6 hp, 4.5 kgf.m torque, 6-speed gearbox, 175 kg, and Showa suspension on Brazilian streets.
High-End Equipment and Technology in the Competitor of the HB20
The Chevrolet Onix Premier, the most comprehensive version, includes a range of features that reinforce its proposal for comfort and technology:
- Six airbags as standard
- Traction and stability control
- 8-inch multimedia center with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Induction charger
- Blind spot sensor (available only in the Premier version)
- Automatic parking system
On the other hand, some criticisms arise regarding the absence of items like LED headlights and the quality of the sound system, which does not offer good bass and treble definition.

Performance and Consumption
The Onix is available with 1.0 naturally aspirated and 1.0 turbo engines, both three-cylinder. The turbo engine, despite having faced some initial issues like fires and chain tensioner failures, has proven to be efficient and suitable for the car’s proposal.
In terms of consumption, the Onix stands out positively. On a 123 km trip to Gramado, the turbo model achieved an average of 15.4 km/l on gasoline, an excellent figure for its category.
Comfort and Interior Space
Internally, the Onix offers a good level of comfort for four adults, although the rear space can be limited for three adults. The Premier version features quality finishes, with leather details in the most used contact points. However, there are criticisms regarding the seat length, which can be uncomfortable on long trips.
The Onix comes equipped with essential safety items, such as traction and stability control and six airbags. However, it does not have automatic emergency braking, a point where its competitors, such as the Hyundai HB20 and Honda City, excel.
The maintenance of the Onix requires special attention, especially concerning the engine oil. It is crucial to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid problems with the timing belt, which can cause severe damage to the engine if not properly maintained.
