Chinese Project In Brazil Plans Transmission Line With 1,468 km And Should Benefit Millions With Clean Energy By 2030.
This Monday (30), State Grid Brazil Holding (SGBH) — Brazilian subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned State Grid Corporation — laid the cornerstone for the largest energy transmission project in Brazil’s history.
With an investment of R$ 23 billion, the “Ultra High Voltage Project in Northeast Brazil” aims to transport energy generated in wind, solar, and hydropower plants from the Northeast to the Midwest.
It is estimated that around 12 million people will benefit, including residents of Brasília (DF).

Investment In Renewable Energy And Infrastructure
The transmission line will have 1,468 km of ultra-high voltage direct current (800 kV) and will include two converter substations, in addition to support units in alternating current.
The total transmission capacity will be 5 million kW — enough to supply a large part of the region.
According to SGBH, the completion of the works is scheduled for 2029, with commercial operation starting in March 2030, under a 30-year concession.
Connection Between Regions And Regional Impact
The route will connect Graça Aranha (MA) and Silvânia (GO), passing through the state of Tocantins.
The CNN Brasil website revealed that the launch event was held in Silvânia and was attended by authorities such as the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira (via videoconference), Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Chinese Ambassador Zhu Qingqiao, ONS Director-General Márcio Rea, and Secretary of Energy Transition Gustavo Ataíde.
Cutting-Edge Technology And Energy Efficiency
The project will apply ultra-compression technology, a pioneering standard in Brazil, aiming to reduce energy losses and enhance system stability.
Experts point out that this can decrease the so-called curtailment — cuts in generation due to lack of capacity to drain — and reduce the need to operate thermal plants in the Midwest.
Economic Growth In The Involved Regions
In addition to enhancing energy security in the country, the construction of the line is expected to boost the economy in the affected regions.
Job creation, increased municipal revenues through ISS and ICMS, and greater attractiveness for agro-industrial ventures, especially in areas with still limited irrigation channels due to current infrastructure, are anticipated.
Sustainability And International Cooperation
By enabling the flow of renewable electricity from the Northeast, the project encourages new plants and strengthens the transition to a matrix less dependent on thermal plants.
Observers highlight that the initiative integrates strategies such as the Chinese “Belt and Road” and the Brazilian plan “Accelerate Growth”, reinforcing technical cooperation between the countries.
Consolidated Presence Of State Grid In Brazil
Operating for 15 years in Brazil and controlling about 10 thousand km of lines — exceeding 16 thousand km when subsidiaries are included — SGBH already operates significant projects such as the line connecting Belo Monte (PA) to the Terminal Rio (RJ) substation.
The company reinforces its leadership in the national transmission sector.
Possible Obstacles And Optimistic Expectation
Despite the optimism, experts caution that delays may occur due to factors such as environmental licensing, workforce mobilization, and weather conditions.
However, the executors’ expectation is to complete the project ahead of schedule, with high quality and accelerated positive impacts.
Do you believe that this type of foreign investment provides real gains to Brazilian society?
