With the Use of Autonomous Seismic Data Collection, the Marine Swarm Robotics Project Will Contribute to the Offshore Energy Market. BOSS Plans to Start Commercial Testing of the Autonomous Submarine Project Already in 2023.
Investments in automation technologies in the maritime sector are becoming increasingly prominent in the global market. Blue Ocean Seismic Services (BOSS) is completing a series of initial tests with its autonomous submarine project and plans to start commercial testing already in 2023. The venture titled Marine Swarm Robotics will allow for more control and efficiency in seismic data collection for use in sectors such as offshore energy generation.
Commercial Testing of BOSS’s Marine Swarm Robotics Autonomous Submarine Project Is Set to Begin in 2023 to Accelerate Market Implementation
The maritime giant BOSS announced the completion of a series of initial feasibility tests for its new bet in the segment, the Marine Swarm Robotics autonomous submarines.
Thus, supported by BP Ventures, Woodside Energy, and Blue Ocean Monitoring, BOSS intends to begin commercial testing of its new project early in 2023, accelerating the vehicles’ entry into the market.

While in Brazil a 10-story building takes 2 years to complete, in China a company stacks pre-fabricated modules and raises the entire building in just 28 hours and 45 minutes.
The company is developing the first fleet of low-environmental-impact submarines, due to their low carbon footprint, for seismic data collection that will later be used in markets such as offshore wind energy, oil and gas, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The start of commercial operations is planned for 2024, beginning with the assembly of up to 250 OBSrV version 1 nodes, based on the AP-OBSrV project, in batches, with pre-commercial tests in the second half of 2023.
After tests conducted in Plymouth, the North Sea, and Australia, BOSS verified the efficiency of the Marine Swarm Robotics autonomous submarines in capturing seismic data and underwater performance.
The latest operations conducted in the North Sea were successful, and the company announced that it achieved several objectives, including the acquisition of additional active seismic data cycles with its alpha vehicles (AP-OBSrV) alongside conventional OBNs.
Thus, BOSS hopes to proceed with the autonomous submarine project with commercial testing already in early 2023, implementing the technology in the global market as soon as possible.
BOSS States That It Is in an Excellent Position in the International Market and Plans to Boost Its Presence in the Maritime Sector with the Project
The Managing Director and CEO of Blue Ocean Seismic Services, Simon Illingworth, commented on the completion of the initial testing phase of Marine Swarm Robotics.
“The successful results of various pre-commercialization tests in recent months are the culmination of a tremendous amount of work from the Blue Ocean Seismic Services team and represent a significant leap on our path to full commercialization,” he said.
Thus, BOSS has established itself in a highly competitive and favorable position in the global market, paving the way for a prosperous future in the maritime segment.
“We are now in an excellent position to continue the operational expansion of the business, engaging with government regulators in our key initial markets and starting commercial operations in 2024. Substantial investments are also being made to secure components for our initial stock of commercial vehicles,” the executive emphasized.
As part of its expansion project, it plans to open a new office in Houston, Texas, in the first quarter of 2023, and reach new clients.
