New Terminal in Dalian Will Be Built on a 20 km² Island and Will Have Capacity for 80 Million Passengers Annually, Surpassing the Population of the United Kingdom.
China is moving forward with the construction of Dalian Jinzhouwan Bay International Airport. The project is the largest artificial island airport in the world. Located on the northeast coast of the country, the new travel hub will be the size of a city. The first flights are expected to take off in 2035.
A Monumental Project in the Bohai Sea
The future Dalian Jinzhouwan Bay International Airport will cover an area of 20 square kilometers in the Bohai Sea. When fully operational, it will feature four runways. The projected capacity is 540,000 flights and 80 million passengers per year. With these numbers, Dalian will surpass Hong Kong International Airport and Kansai Airport in Japan. It will become the largest airport in the world built on an artificial island. A recent publication poetically described the project: “The country’s largest offshore airport is slowly rising from sea level like the sunrise in the east.”
Challenges in Building an Airport City

The progress of the work faces significant obstacles. Li Xiang, the project engineer, highlighted the challenges. He mentioned the complex geological conditions and the high difficulty of drilling. Additionally, the demand for high quality and a tight construction schedule increases the complexity. The initial airport capacity will be 43 million passengers per year, but this number is expected to double after the completion of the entire project.

Material practically banned for almost 90 years makes a strong comeback in construction: made of hemp and lime, it insulates 15 times more than concrete, absorbs CO₂ over the centuries, and challenges an industry that helped push it out of the market.

Replacing a Century-Old and Overcrowded Airport
The construction of the new airport addresses the limitations of the current Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport. In operation for nearly a century, it was built during the Japanese occupation. After several expansions, it reached its maximum capacity. Last year, it served 658,000 international passengers. Dalian Zhoushuizi is located in a valley surrounded by mountains, which complicates navigation for pilots, especially in bad weather. The terrain prevents expansion and limits operational safety.
Boosting Dalian’s Economy and Connectivity

The new offshore location of Jinzhouwan Airport offers more space and improves safety measures. Dalian is a thriving coastal city with about 7.5 million inhabitants. Its strategic position has made it a trading hub with Japan and South Korea. The city is also vital for the oil refining, transportation, logistics, and tourism sectors. The new airport aims to further strengthen these industries, enhancing connectivity and positioning Dalian as a regional air transport hub.
The Centerpiece in China’s Aviation Expansion
Large airports are the foundation for the ambitions of Chinese aviation. The country is on track to surpass the U.S. as the largest air travel market in the world. To achieve this, a new and vast infrastructure is needed. The opening of Daxing Airport (PKX) in Beijing in 2019 was a prime example of this strategy. At the time, Chinese authorities stated that the country would need 450 airports by 2035, nearly double the current count. The major project in Dalian is a key part of this expansion plan.
