The contracts of the Huangpu Wenchong shipyard, of the state-owned CSSC, total 13 ships of 5,000 TEUs or more for three shipowners. The site Eworldship estimates the batch at around US$ 1.07 billion, and the company now accumulates 39 medium-sized container ships ordered, amid the green renewal of the fleet.

While the world seeks low-carbon ships to renew the global fleet, a Chinese shipyard signed 13 contracts in one week, accumulated 39 orders, and moved about US$ 1 billion in a single historic batch of container ships. The movement draws attention in a sector undergoing transformation.

Last week, the Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, of China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), signed contracts for the construction of 13 container ships with a capacity equal to or greater than 5,000 TEUs for three domestic and international shipowners. At current market rates, the maritime news site Eworldship estimates the aggregate value of the batch at around 7.3 billion yuan, or US$ 1.07 billion. With the new contracts, the company now totals 39 medium-sized container ships ordered, and described the order as a historic achievement amid the sector’s green transition.

Last week, the Huangpu Wenchong shipyard, of China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), signed contracts for the construction of 13 container ships with a capacity equal to or greater than 5,000 TEUs for three domestic and international shipowners. The signing of so many contracts in a single week stands out in the naval sector.

The batch includes different sizes of medium-sized ships: three of 5,300 TEU, four of 6,200 TEU, and six of 6,400 TEU. The combination of various models in a single order reflects the shipowners’ pursuit to renew the container ship fleet at a time of strong demand.

A batch estimated at about US$ 1 billion

According to information released by ChinaDaily, At current market rates, the maritime news site Eworldship estimates the aggregate value of the 13 container ships at about 7.3 billion yuan, or US$ 1.07 billion. It is worth noting that this is a third-party calculation, not a value officially disclosed by the shipyard.

Huangpu Wenchong described the batch order of various types of ships as a historic achievement for the market, capitalizing on the green transition trend of the naval industry and strengthening its competitive position in the international sector. These are, however, characterizations by the company itself, in a statement about the business, and not an independent assessment.

39 orders and the bet on the green transition

With the new contracts, the company now has a total of 39 medium-sized container ships ordered, with a capacity equal to or greater than 5,000 TEUs. According to the statement, this gives it an important advantage in large-scale construction in the global medium-sized ship segment.

The shipyard also stated that the global container fleet is undergoing a renewal phase amid growing demands for compliance with low-carbon standards. The 13 ships, therefore, enter a market moving towards the green transition, although the company’s statement does not detail the specific emission characteristics of each vessel.

The 5,300 TEU model and the Guangzhou shipyard

Among the container ships in the batch, the 5,300 TEU model is a reference for medium-sized ships, independently developed by Huangpu Wenchong. It is 235 meters long and 37.5 meters wide, with a cargo capacity of 71,500 metric tons.

Huangpu Wenchong is a subsidiary of CSSC and a company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The shipyard is located at the mouth of the Pearl River, in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, one of the hubs of Chinese shipbuilding.

The Chinese shipyard Huangpu Wenchong signed contracts for 13 container ships in a single week and reached a total of 39 medium-sized ships ordered, in a batch that the site Eworldship estimates at about 7.3 billion yuan, or US$ 1.07 billion, at current market rates.

The company frames the order as a historic achievement and an advantage in the international shipbuilding market, amidst the renewal of the global fleet driven by low-carbon demands, although these characterizations and the cost estimate come, respectively, from the company’s own statement and a third-party calculation.

The move shows how the green transition and the search for new ships are reshaping the global maritime sector.

And you, what did you think of the batch of container ships from the Chinese shipyard? Do you believe the green transition will accelerate the renewal of the global fleet? Share your opinion and exchange ideas with other readers about the naval sector and logistics.
