Turkey Inaugurates Musical Road That Plays Mozart When Drivers Maintain The Correct Speed, Merging Road Safety and Innovation

Turkey has taken an innovative step in road safety with the inauguration of its first musical road. The project was opened last week and aims to help control the speed of vehicles on the country’s highways.

The new road is located on the state highway connecting Nallihan to Beypazari, near the capital Ankara. When cars pass over the grooves designed in the asphalt, the “Turkish March” (Rondo Alla Turca) by Mozart begins to play.

The music is played clearly only when the vehicle is traveling at the correct speed set for that section.

Technology Developed by The Government

The project was developed by Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. According to the ministry, this technology represents the junction of culture, innovation, and public safety.

The intention is to use music as an educational tool, encouraging drivers to maintain the appropriate speed during their journey.

Turkish government authorities stated that the project could serve as a model to be replicated in other regions of the country.

The initiative places Turkey among countries that have already experimented with this type of technology on their highways, such as Japan, South Korea, and the United States.

The Musical Road: Operation Based On Vibrations

Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, highlighted the functionality of the system. He explained that the grooves on the road surface are organized precisely.

Each groove emits a different frequency, which, when traversed at a constant rhythm, forms the complete melody.

“These marks or grooves are designed to provide a melodic sound, provided that cars pass at a specific rhythm. Each groove or marking on the surface is arranged to produce a distinct frequency pitch,” Uraloğlu detailed.

The choice of location for the project was also made carefully. According to the minister, it was important to select a highway with little heavy traffic, which prevents premature wear of the grooves and maintains sound quality over time.

Additionally, the chosen location does not impact local wildlife, preserving the natural environment.

No Disturbance to Local Residents

Another factor considered was the well-being of the residents. Authorities ensured that the road is not close to residential areas. This avoids the annoyance of repetitive sound for those living in the region, as the same music could be heard constantly by residents.

With the positive reception of the first musical road, authorities have already begun the installation of a second unit in Ankara. The government sees potential in expanding the initiative, which combines entertainment, education, and traffic safety.

The new musical road in Turkey represents an intriguing and functional milestone on the country’s highways. In addition to providing a different experience for drivers, it reinforces the importance of respecting speed limits.
