Chinese Company Announces New PHEV System Capable of Delivering Equivalent Range of 34 Km/L. Discover the New Technology from BYD That Comes to Overthrow Rival Geely.
The Chinese automaker BYD launched its new hybrid technology for cars that promises to save a lot of fuel. The new system, which was launched last Tuesday (28), will allow the driver to achieve a range of 100 km using only 2.9 liters of fuel. This is a record consumption, even if the vehicle’s battery is drained.
New Technology from BYD Promises to Deliver Range Greater Than 2,000 Km
The new technology from BYD was presented by the brand’s president, Wang Chuanfu, who was present at the automaker’s first car factory, located in Xi’an, the capital of the Shaanxi province. According to him, if the vehicle has a charged battery and a full tank, its range can easily exceed 2,000 km.
Plug-in hybrid cars from BYD, such as the SongPlus, are already examples of range, as they consume little fuel, approximately 3.8 liters per 100 km driven. With the announcement of BYD’s new technology, the expectation is that the next generation will generate even more savings for owners of the brand’s vehicles.

Toyota Launches First 100% Electric Car in Brazil: bZ4X with 343 HP, All-Wheel Drive, 361 km Range, Priced at $419,990 BRL, Limited to 99 Units
In the last three years, plug-in hybrids that charge at the socket have been BYD’s bestsellers. In total, over 3.6 million units have been sold. It is important to mention that BYD and Geely are in a fierce battle for 10th place in the world ranking of car manufacturers.
This achievement marks a significant milestone, as 2024 is the first year that a Chinese brand enters the top 10. Both companies currently hold 3.5% of the global market share, tied side by side.
Understand the Dispute Between BYD and Geely
The competition intensifies as the two automakers clash over who boasts the PHEV system with the greatest range. The dispute initially focused on engine efficiency, with BYD claiming a superior thermal efficiency of 46.5% in a mass-produced engine, compared to Geely’s unverified number.
The battlefield has now shifted to fuel consumption, especially with the arrival of BYD’s new technology. The brand stands out with an impressive 2.9 liters per 100 km driven, something close to 34.4 km/L with its PHEV DM-i 5.0 system, using the older NEDC testing standard.
However, Geely contests this number, arguing that the NEDC is outdated and does not reflect real driving conditions. They advocate for the WLTC standard, which yields a less optimistic figure of 3.8 L per 100 km for BYD’s new technology.
The brand retaliates, stating that the NEDC standard better represents driving conditions in major cities in China, characterized by lower average speeds. Although press tests have shown that the BYD Qin L achieved a remarkable range of over 2,400 kilometers, the specific driving conditions remain confidential.
Cars with BYD’s New Technology
BYD launched two new hybrid cars that promise to appeal to drivers seeking range. Named Qin Plus DM-i and Seal 06 DM, both models utilize plug-in technology and are built on the new generation of the DM platform.
The models can achieve up to 34 km/L and deliver a range close to 2,100 km, reaching an overall energy efficiency of 46.06%. Both models promise one-third of the fuel consumption and three times the range compared to traditional cars.
