The Brazilian Navy Advances in the Modernization of Its Fleet with the Acquisition of the HMS Bulwark, a Large Warship That Impresses with Its Numbers. The Vessel, Built by the Royal Navy, Combines Troop Transport, Helicopters, and Supplies, as Well as Strategic Range That Reinforces National Defense.

The Brazilian Navy is preparing to sign, in September, the contract to purchase the HMS Bulwark, a warship of the Royal Navy.

The letter of intent was signed in April and, since then, the procedures have been underway. The vessel, measuring 170 meters, will be employed in various strategic missions.

Officers emphasize that, in addition to amphibious operations, the ship can be used in humanitarian actions and in situations of public calamity.

This versatility enhances the Armed Forces’ response capability. The Bulwark will also be able to transport troops, vehicles, supplies, and even field hospitals.

Capacity and Use in Brazil

The vessel accommodates 290 crew members and can receive up to 710 additional military personnel.

With this, the Navy intends to strengthen the patrolling of the Blue Amazon, a maritime region of economic and geopolitical importance. Rich in oil and minerals, the area is a target of international interest.

Brazil has already faced incidents in the region. In April 2023, the Navy had to remove a German ship conducting research without authorization near the Rio Grande Elevation, a strategic location due to the presence of critical minerals.

Therefore, the arrival of the Bulwark aims to increase surveillance and protection of this asset.

Training and Revitalization

Currently, the ship is undergoing a complete renovation in Plymouth, England.

In September, 48 Brazilian military personnel will travel to oversee the work and receive training. In November, another 44 professionals will also be trained to operate the vessel.

Next year, the remainder of the crew will go to England for the commissioning and transfer of the vessel. The arrival in Brazil is expected in 2026, after the revitalization is completed.

Technical Specifications

The HMS Bulwark has features that classify it as a valuable asset. Check it out:

  • Overall Length: 176 m
  • Molded Beam: 28.9 m
  • Draught Loaded: 7.1 m
  • Displacement: 18,500 t
  • Flight Deck: operation of up to 2 large aircraft
  • Maximum Sustained Speed: 18 knots
  • Range: 8,000 nautical miles
  • Crew: 290 crew members
  • Transport Capacity: up to 710 military personnel

These numbers confirm the ship’s robustness, combining range, speed, and logistical capability in a single naval system.

HMS Bulwark: Trajectory of a British Giant

The HMS Bulwark (L15) is one of the two ships of the Albion class. Built by the BAE Systems shipyard, it was launched in 2001 and entered service in 2005. From the outset, it served as a platform for transporting troops, vehicles, and equipment for the Royal Navy.

The ship features a floodable dock at the stern, used to launch landing craft.

Its 64-meter flight deck allows for the operation of helicopters such as Merlin, Sea King, and Chinook. This has made the Bulwark a mobile command center, capable of supporting joint operations on land, sea, and air.

Remarkable Missions

Shortly after entering service, the ship was sent to the Middle East. In 2006, it operated in the Gulf of Aden on counter-terrorism and anti-piracy missions, as well as protecting oil platforms.

Also in 2006, it led the evacuation of around 1,300 civilians from Beirut during the crisis between Israel and Lebanon. This was one of the largest evacuation operations conducted by the United Kingdom since World War II.

In 2015, the ship gained international prominence again. During Operation Weald in the Mediterranean, it rescued over 2,900 migrants crossing the sea in precarious conditions. This mission highlighted its relevance in humanitarian crisis scenarios.

Flagship and International Prestige

Between 2011 and 2015, the HMS Bulwark served as the flagship of the Royal Navy. During this period, it coordinated large naval exercises, including joint operations with NATO allies.

Its structure solidified its role as a high-level command platform.

In addition to military functions, the ship participated in diplomatic events and international visits, reinforcing the image of the United Kingdom as a global naval power.

Despite its historical importance, the HMS Bulwark was placed in reserve in 2020.

The British government even considered its return to operations, but cuts of around £500 million in defense projects prevented this from becoming a reality.

This scenario paved the way for negotiations with Brazil.

Now, the vessel is preparing for a new phase as part of the Brazilian fleet, in missions that combine defense, logistics, and humanitarian aid.
