From Humble Origins in Rural China to Leadership of One of the World’s Largest Electric Car Manufacturers, Wang Chuanfu Built an Empire with Discretion and an Obsession for Batteries.
The Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD, founded by billionaire Wang Chuanfu, experienced a week of highs and lows. Recently, the company launched a new battery charging system capable of adding about 470 km of range in just five minutes, putting BYD back in the spotlight.
From China’s Interior to Global Leadership
Wang Chuanfu was born in 1966 in Anhui province. From humble origins, he received support from his siblings to study.
With a background in chemistry and metallurgy, he moved to Shenzhen. There, he founded BYD in the 1990s, initially as a battery manufacturer. Nokia and Motorola were among the first customers.

Wang’s obsession with batteries has always been evident.
Recently, his company showcased advancements in technology, integrating the battery into the car’s structure. Now, the new fast charging system is another milestone along this path.
Performance Outperforms Competition
This innovation could finally eliminate the so-called “range anxiety” — one of the main reasons many consumers still hesitate to switch to electric vehicles.
These advancements could earn BYD a significant share of a market that, according to EY, is expected to generate US$ 660 billion annually through the transition to electric vehicles by 2030.
The Discreet Billionaire
Wang’s fortune, now estimated at nearly US$ 30 billion by Bloomberg, places him among the richest men in China.
Still, he maintains a discreet lifestyle. His home is located near BYD’s factories, and he avoids public appearances. Assistants represent him whenever possible.
Internally, he is known as “the chairman.” He tends to participate in detailed decisions and closely monitors everything. There are reports that he even needed to approve the distribution of fruits to employees.
