Rise of Gasoline and Diesel Increases Fuel Consumption in Minas, While Ethanol Loses Ground in the State’s Economy in 2025.

The consumption of fuels in Minas Gerais reached, in 2025, the highest level in the last 25 years, according to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels.

The increase occurred over the past year throughout the state, driven mainly by the rise in gasoline sales, the prominence of diesel, and the growth of aviation kerosene.

At the same time, ethanol lost ground, signaling important changes in consumer behavior and the state’s economy.

From January to December, 17.9 million cubic meters of fuels were sold in the state.

The volume represents a growth of 3% compared to 2024 and solidifies Minas as one of the main energy consumption hubs in the country.

The result reflects both the resumption of productive activities and the expansion of urban, road, and air mobility.

Gasoline Advances and Surpasses Unprecedented Mark in Two Decades

Among the highlights of the survey, gasoline reached a historic milestone.

For the first time in over 20 years, the fuel surpassed the mark of 5 million cubic meters sold in a single year in Minas Gerais.

The growth was 10% compared to the previous year, signaling a clear preference from consumers in 2025.

This movement occurred, mainly, due to the price relationship with ethanol, which lost competitiveness over the period. Thus, even with the increasing presence of environmental debates, the economic factor weighed more in the refueling decision.

Ethanol Loses Ground and Records Significant Decline

In contrast to gasoline, ethanol experienced a significant retraction.

Sales totaled 2.2 million cubic meters in 2025, down 11.2% compared to the previous year.

The decline interrupts a trend of stability observed in previous years and raises alarms for the biofuels chain.

According to economist and professor at Uni-BH, Fernando Sette Júnior, the scenario reveals a classic process of substitution between close goods.

“A double-digit drop in ethanol simultaneous to a gasoline record suggests that, throughout 2025, the price relationship consistently shifted against the biofuel.

This indicates not only a short-term adjustment but a realignment of economic incentives that altered the overall consumption pattern,” explains the expert.

Price Surpasses Environmental Agenda in Fuel Consumption

According to Sette Júnior, in the Brazilian market, ethanol tends to be competitive when it costs up to 70% of the price of gasoline, considering the performance of flex engines.

In 2025, this condition was not consistently maintained in Minas, which helped explain the migration of consumption.

“Based on the data collected by ANP, the assessment is that the pricing policy and/or the dynamics of agricultural costs had a greater impact than consumers’ environmental preferences.

It is a clear case where price dominates green intentions, revealing the importance of regulatory design if the goal is to maintain renewable participation,” he emphasizes.

Diesel Maintains Leadership and Sustains the State’s Economy

Despite the growth of gasoline, diesel remains the most consumed fuel in Minas Gerais.

In 2025, 8.7 million cubic meters were sold, a volume that represents almost half of the total state consumption and a 3.3% increase over the previous year.

This performance reflects the strength of the state’s economy, which is heavily based on logistics, agroindustry, mining, and cargo transport.

“Its dominance shows that the economic growth observed is not only household consumption but also the circulation of goods and productive activity,” notes Sette Júnior.

Aviation Grows at an Accelerated Pace and Strengthens the Service Sector

Another relevant highlight was aviation kerosene, which recorded a growth of 10.6% in 2025.

In total, 332,916 cubic meters of the fuel were sold, boosting airports and regional hubs in Minas Gerais.

The advancement is interpreted as a clear sign of dynamism in the service sector.

In addition to stimulating air transport, the increase positively impacts associated chains, such as hospitality, tourism, and business activities.

For the economist, this growth is linked to the increase in mobility of the middle and upper classes, expansion of routes, and greater circulation of human capital.

“Economically, this usually accompanies phases of confidence, investment, and circulation of human capital, factors associated with productivity,” he points out.

Scenario Points to Challenges and Opportunities for 2026

The record in fuel consumption in Minas confirms a moment of economic heat, but also exposes challenges.

While gasoline and diesel reinforce revenue and supply predictability, the retraction of ethanol may affect investments, agro-industrial chains, and decarbonization goals.

Thus, the performance of 2025 not only consolidates the best result in 25 years but also opens space for debates on energy policy, environmental balance, and sustainability of growth in the coming cycles of the state’s economy.
