With a Focus on Sustainability, Copel Allocates R$ 20 Million to Bring Solar Energy to Isolated Communities on the Coast of Paraná, Strengthening the Green Transition with Investment in Renewable Sources
Copel’s announcement of the R$ 20 million investment in solar energy, made this Monday (15), marks a significant advancement in the search for sustainable solutions on the coast of Paraná.
The project includes the installation of photovoltaic systems in 215 homes distributed between Ilha do Mel, Superagui, and other traditional communities in the region, promoting energy inclusion and environmental respect.
Solar Energy and Sustainability on the Coast of Paraná
Copel’s initiative represents a milestone in the energy transition of the state of Paraná. The investment will be directed towards the implementation of individual solar energy generation systems, focusing on isolated communities with difficult access to the conventional electrical grid. This action reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainability and social inclusion.

Benefited Localities
- Ilha do Mel (Ponta Oeste): 21 consumer units
- Ilha da Cotinga (Pindoty Indigenous Village): 17 units
- Superagui National Park (Guaraqueçaba): 177 units in nine traditional communities
These areas are recognized for their environmental and cultural significance, making the project even more relevant from the perspective of preservation and respect for local populations.
Technical Details of Copel’s Solar Energy Project
Each home will receive an individual photovoltaic system with a fiberglass or aluminum structure — materials chosen for their resistance to corrosion, common in coastal areas. The systems will have:
- Power of 1,250 watts
- Voltage of 127 volts
- Autonomy of 48 hours through batteries, exceeding the minimum required by Aneel (36 hours)
- Generation capacity between 80 kWh/month and up to 128 kWh/month in summer
The installation will be carried out at no cost to residents, with an expected completion by March 2026. The choice of individual systems ensures greater autonomy and energy security for each household.
Logistics and Safety in the Implementation of the Systems
Copel will be responsible for the preventive maintenance and emergency support of the systems. The structures will be installed close to the residences, maintaining a safety zone of three meters around, free of buildings and tall vegetation. This area will allow technicians access for inspections and regular maintenance.
Additionally, residents have been advised not to share energy with other houses and to keep the system intact, ensuring the efficiency and durability of the equipment. Copel will also provide continuous technical support, ensuring the proper functioning of the systems over the years.
Community Participation and Respect for International Standards
Since October 2024, Copel has held meetings with the involved communities, respecting the protocols of the International Labour Organization (ILO) for prior and informed consultation. The project also received support from agencies such as:
- Public Ministry of the State of Paraná
- Water and Land Institute (IAT)
- State Department of Culture (SEEC)
- Municipal City Hall of Paranaguá
This interinstitutional coordination was essential to enable the project in areas of environmental preservation and cultural heritage. Active listening to the communities and respect for their traditions were fundamental pillars for the acceptance and success of the initiative.
Copel and the Commitment to Sustainability in Paraná
Copel’s project is a concrete example of how investment in solar energy can promote sustainability and social inclusion. By bringing clean energy to isolated communities, the company contributes to:
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Improvement of residents’ quality of life
- Appreciation of sustainable practices in preservation areas
- Strengthening the energy infrastructure of Paraná
Furthermore, the initiative aligns with global sustainable development goals and the energy transition that various countries have been adopting. The use of renewable sources is an irreversible trend, and Paraná positions itself as a leading player in this scenario.
Social and Environmental Impact of the Investment in Solar Energy
The arrival of solar energy to these communities represents more than comfort and modernity. It can enable:
- Use of household appliances and medical equipment
- Proper lighting for nighttime activities
- Access to information and communication
- Promotion of sustainable tourism
These benefits have the potential to transform the local reality, promoting economic and social development without compromising the environment. Solar energy, besides being clean, is silent and low maintenance, making it ideal for conservation areas.
Communities Served in Superagui National Park
The nine communities benefited in Guaraqueçaba are:
- Abacateiro
- Ararapira
- Barbados
- Barra do Ararapira
- Canudal
- Saco do Morro
- Sibuí
- Vila Fátima
- Vila Rita
These localities face historical challenges in accessing electricity, and now they are part of an innovative distributed generation model focused on sustainability. By investing in these regions, Copel recognizes the importance of ensuring dignity and basic infrastructure for all citizens of Paraná.
Copel’s Investment Strengthens the Energy Transition in Paraná
The R$ 20 million investment from Copel in solar energy on the coast of Paraná is more than a one-off action — it is a long-term strategy that reinforces the company’s role as an agent of transformation. By combining technology, environmental respect, and social inclusion, the project stands out as a national reference in sustainability.
With an expected completion by March 2026, the initiative promises not only to bring light to communities but also to illuminate paths for a greener, fairer, and more efficient future. Copel reaffirms its commitment to the development of Paraná, investing in solutions that respect the environment and promote quality of life.
Solar energy, in this context, is not just an alternative — it is a powerful tool for social and environmental transformation. By prioritizing vulnerable communities and conservation areas, Copel demonstrates that it is possible to reconcile progress with responsibility, and that investing in renewable sources is a viable and necessary path for Brazil.
