Academic Recognition Is Essential for Institutions That Train High-Level Professionals in Strategic Sectors. In the Latest International Ranking, USP’s Petroleum Engineering Program Was Ranked Among the Best in the World
The University of São Paulo (USP) confirmed its prominent position in the global academic landscape.
In the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2025, released on Wednesday (12), the institution was ranked among the best in the world in 49 of the 55 evaluated areas.
This performance reinforces the university’s relevance in various fields of knowledge.

Petroleum Engineering in the World Top 10
Among the evaluated programs, Petroleum Engineering achieved the highest position for a Latin American institution, securing 9th place.
This result places USP among the global references in the field, demonstrating the excellence of its research and teaching.
Additionally, eight other programs at the university are among the top 50 in the world. Dentistry ranks 13th. Art History is ranked between 21 and 50. Anthropology appears in 25th place, followed by Mining Engineering (33rd), Sports (39th), Archaeology (43rd), Nursing (47th), and Politics and International Studies (50th).
Strong Presence in Various Fields
USP also performed well in other classifications of the ranking. In 30 areas, it ranked between 51st and 100th. In eight areas, it appeared among the top 150, and in two, among the top 250. These numbers demonstrate the breadth of the institution and its international recognition.
In addition to program rankings, USP excelled in the evaluation by major fields of knowledge. In all five analyzed categories, the university was among the top 100 in the world. The highlights were:
- Social Science and Management: 43rd place;
- Arts and Humanities: 50th place;
- Life Sciences and Medicine: 47th place;
- Natural Sciences: 70th place;
- Engineering and Technology: 67th place.
USP Leads in Latin America
The ranking analyzed programs from over 5,200 universities. In total, 1,747 institutions had programs ranked. USP’s performance established it as the highest-ranked institution in Latin America, driven by the recognition of fields such as Petroleum Engineering, Dentistry, and Art History.
The QS World University Ranking by Subject has been published since 2013 by Quacquarelli Symonds, a British organization specializing in higher education assessment.
The ranking uses five main indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, scientific citations, H-index, and internationalization. These criteria vary according to the evaluated area.
