Controversy Surrounds The Growth Of E-Learning: Between The Democratization Of Access And The Quality Of Education
Brazil, 2023 – Classrooms are increasingly empty, but don’t be fooled, higher education is in full expansion. According to the 2022 Higher Education Census, 72% of students approved in entrance exams for private higher education courses opted for Distance Learning (EAD). And the topic is generating a lot of buzz.
One of the great advantages of EAD is the democratization of access to education. With the expansion of this modality, students from small towns and rural areas have the opportunity to attend higher education without having to bear the costs of moving to large centers.
“It’s a revolution. We are bringing knowledge to the most remote corners of Brazil”, explains Luiz Bourbon, a public servant and advocate of distance learning.

Flexibility And Convenience In E-Learning
The flexibility of schedules is another point that weighs in favor of EAD. “Those who work all day and only have the evening free can now study. It’s a wonderful opportunity for this crowd”, comments a former law student who preferred EAD.
But not everything is perfect. Critics argue that the quality of education may be compromised. Professional entities, such as nursing and dentistry councils, express concern over the authorization of entirely distance courses in their fields.
“We are not talking about a history class, we are talking about medical procedures. You cannot learn this in front of a computer”, criticizes a member of the nursing entity.
The Ministry Of Education Enters The Scene
The Ministry Of Education (MEC) is studying the possibility of authorizing even health courses to be fully distance, except for practical activities, which would take place at on-site activity hubs. This has caused an uproar among various professional entities.
Another criticism of the growth of EAD is related to the job market for teachers. “If a single recorded class can be used for millions of students, what will happen to teachers’ jobs?”, questions a university professor.
Distance learning is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it democratizes access to higher education and offers flexibility. On the other, it raises important questions about the quality of education and the future of the job market for teachers. What is certain is that the debate is far from over.
