Researchers Create the Innovative AI ‘CyberRunner’, a Robot Capable of Outperforming Humans in Physical Tests, Being More Than a Second Faster.
Scientists from the ETH Zurich Research Institute have achieved a remarkable milestone in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). They have developed CyberRunner, an advanced AI that not only demonstrates quick reasoning and strategic skills but also outperforms humans in challenges that require physical capabilities. This development represents a significant leap in integrating artificial intelligence with physical skills.
Artificial Intelligence Is Over 1 Second Ahead of Humans
The machine in question is called CyberRunner, a new AI capable of completing a very simple maze challenge. In the game, the user can control two knobs that help direct a ball from the start to the end of the path. It is filled with false alternatives and dead-end paths, and it has holes that drop the object, forcing the challenger to start over from scratch.
In the tests, the AI robot managed to complete the game in 14.48 seconds, marking the current world record in the category. The highest time reached by a human challenger is 15.41 seconds, set by Lars Göran Danielsson, who is a veteran in this challenge, in 2022.

Maritime engine without diesel receives international certification and can deliver pure hydrogen to ships with power up to 2,670 kW, without CO₂, without sulfur, without soot, and with exhaust composed of water vapor.

The main differential of CyberRunner is its capability of researchers applying reinforcement learning models used in virtual tasks. This means it moves from content generation or image recognition, for instance, to a series of real actions.
According to the team from ETH Zurich, the AI was trained based on 6 hours of direct gameplay. Over the attempts, CyberRunner began to improve its spatial awareness and make decisions proactively. Thus, it creates a real-time strategy based on all the maze models it has absorbed.
Artificial Intelligence Starts to ‘Cheat’ in Games
CyberRunner even naturally discovered some shortcuts and began to cheat by skipping stages in the games. This led researchers to stop the tests to reprogram it and guide it not to do so anymore. Scientists also state that from now on, smaller institutes can apply customized artificial intelligence infrastructures in robots at much lower costs, which could encourage studies in the field.
The results of the research involving the new AI, which solves mazes better than humans, were published in a paper that has not yet been peer-reviewed by the academic community. It is worth noting that CyberRunner explores recent advances in reinforcement learning based on models and its capability to make informed decisions about potentially successful behaviors, planning for the future.
During the game, it captures observations and receives rewards based on its performance, through the “eyes” of a camera facing the maze.
Importance of Artificial Intelligence
The technology is rapidly transforming the world, whether through innovations in specific fields or improving previously manual tasks. The fact is that among the most interesting new developments is Artificial Intelligence (AI).
AI is the field responsible for creating machines and systems capable of performing tasks that would normally require human intelligence. This includes activities such as voice recognition, computer vision, decision-making, machine learning, and much more.
AI can generate a virtual tutor that can teach according to preferences and adapt to the teaching methodology that suits best. Artificial Intelligence is also revolutionizing healthcare, helping doctors diagnose diseases faster, improving treatments, and even assisting in the research of new medications. Autonomous cars guided by AI have the potential to reduce traffic. This is essential for a sustainable and efficient future.
