Oil and Gas Market Demands New Leadership With Strategic Vision, Adaptability to Energy Transition, and Human-Centered Management, Points Out Grupo Hub.
The Oil and Gas market demands new leadership that possesses a refined strategic vision, an ability to adapt to the energy transition, and skills in human-centered management, as revealed by Grupo Hub. Companies are already noticing an increase in the demand for executives who fit this new profile, boosting competitiveness in the sector.
With the uptick in activities, the Oil and Gas Industry requires professionals with strong technical competencies, but who also have the ability to foresee future scenarios. The energy transition is radically transforming the requirements of the Oil and Gas market, making continuous preparation of leaders essential. The growing demand is creating unique opportunities for innovative executives who are capable of navigating the complexities of this transformational period.
Growth of the Oil and Gas Market
The Oil and Gas market is experiencing a significant recovery, especially in the state of Rio de Janeiro. According to an annual survey conducted by the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan), there was a 33% increase in the number of new wells designated for oil and gas production in 2023, with the Campos Basin standing out. According to the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), oil companies operating in the country are expected to invest approximately US$ 2 billion in exploring about 40 wells in Brazil in the coming years. Recent auctions of exploratory blocks are providing additional impetus to the sector, resulting in new job opportunities and a high demand for leaders, as analyzed by Grupo Hub, a HR consultancy offering recruitment, selection, and development solutions, with a decade of experience in the market and serving clients such as Teekay, Repsol, CHC, and Viridien (formerly CGG).

Investments and Opportunities in the Oil and Gas Sector
Exploratory activities are expected to consume 80% to 90% of the US$ 2 billion total, with sectors such as Drilling standing out in the value chain of the Oil and Gas industry. Executives leading companies in this vertical are highly sought after in the market. ‘Organizations that do not protect themselves will end up losing talent’, says Rafael Meneses, regional director of Rio de Janeiro at Grupo Hub and head of the Top Executive business unit. Gabrielle Botelho, HR director at Viridien, a global leader in Geoscience serving major companies in the sector in over 40 countries, highlights the optimism in the market, which is already reflected in hiring. ‘In 2023, we opened technical and leadership positions, and for 2024, we expect to double that number, keeping pace with the growth and new opportunities in the Oil and Gas sector’. Rafael, who joined Grupo Hub this month to strengthen the company’s operations in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizes that the Oil and Gas market requires a multidisciplinary approach from its executives, demanding profiles that not only excel technically but are also capable of providing long-term strategic visions.
Challenges and Future of the Oil and Gas Industry
Although the new CEO of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, has stated that her management’s priority will be to accelerate oil exploration activities to replenish the company’s reserves in the upcoming years, the gradual energy transition to ‘cleaner’ energy sources is already a global requirement and should be on the agenda of all executives. ‘We are already experiencing a necessary energy transition to cleaner energy sources like solar and wind, and the way energy production and consumption is perceived is transforming radically. The question that remains for the leaders of this sector is: how to keep their business relevant and competitive in the long term if the energy matrix is undergoing this transformation? And how can the executive themselves remain relevant in this scenario? There is no single answer to this complex question, but it is undeniable that thinking strategically about these movements is already vital’, emphasizes Rafael.
Search for Multidisciplinary Professionals and Adaptation
Anna Paula Lougon, director of New Business Development at Viridien, agrees. She explains that, in addition to technical experience, the company seeks professionals with market and business knowledge. ‘This need has led to an increase in the hiring of project managers, operations directors, and other executives with in-depth knowledge of regional dynamics and the Oil and Gas sector’. Besides fluctuations in exploration due to lengthy licensing processes, there is growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions. As part of our continuous improvement process, we seek energy efficiency and constant operational efficiency. This scenario not only presents challenges but also brings many opportunities for professional development and growth. Those looking to reach high levels in this career will have to work on their ability to adapt to new technologies and sustainability practices.
Human-Centered Leadership and Emotion Management
Another major challenge for new leadership in the Oil and Gas sector, according to Rafael, is the necessary humanization in an environment considered extremely technical. ‘The activity requires a leader who personalizes approaches with their team members and values the differences among them, ensuring not only short-term results but also preparing them for future leadership positions. A practical example is the significant challenge faced by managers on drilling platforms, which often operate as isolated cities from the continents’. For Rafael, these professionals are constantly under pressure for results, executing tasks that demand a very high level of precision over weeks without access to natural spaces to balance stress. ‘In light of all these challenges, the role of leadership becomes even more important than in other businesses that operate under normal temperature and pressure conditions. Emotion management is crucial’, reinforces Rafael.
