An Amazing Discovery Occurred in Tel Azekah, Region Where, According to the Bible, David Is Said to Have Faced Goliath. The Found Item Is Almost 4 Thousand Years Old and Surprised Even the Most Experienced Archaeologists.
Can you imagine tripping over an artifact dating back to the Bronze Age while hiking with family? Well, that’s exactly what happened to little Ziv Nitzan, just 3 years old, during a visit to the archaeological site of Tel Azekah in Israel. What seemed like just another stone among thousands turned out to be a talked-about archaeological discovery: a scarab seal approximately 3,800 years old, used as an amulet by ancient civilizations.
According to Omer Nitzan, Ziv’s older sister, “out of the 7,000 stones around, she picked that one.” While wiping off the dust, the family realized the object had something special. The discovery was immediately handed over to the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), which confirmed its authenticity and classified it as a Canaanite scarab with Egyptian influence, according to renowned archaeologist Daphna Ben-Tor, curator of the Israel Museum.
“These seals were not just simple adornments. They symbolized status, power, and religiousness. In Ancient Egypt, the scarab was a symbol of renewal and divine manifestation on Earth,” Ben-Tor explained.

The archaeological discovery rekindles interest in Tel Azekah, one of Israel’s most important sites and a setting for excavations that have revealed structures from the Kingdom of Judah. It is precisely in this region that, according to the Old Testament, David faced Goliath — meaning the location is loaded with historical and religious significance.
Moreover, young Ziv was honored with a certificate of exemplary citizenship, awarded to those who contribute significantly to the preservation of the country’s history. A more than fair way to recognize that, even without knowing, she played a role in one of the most symbolic archaeological discoveries of the year.
