Gerdau’s Investments in Its Plants to Resume Steel Production
Gerdau recently announced that it will resume steel production operations this September at its unit located in the municipality of Araucária, in the state of Paraná. To restart activities at the plant, the largest Brazilian steel producer and one of the main suppliers of long steel in the Americas, needed to invest around R$ 55 million. The company is also taking advantage of the ongoing high construction market to reactivate the unit.
With an annual production capacity of 420,000 tons of crude steel, the plant located in Araucária, Paraná, has been dormant since 2014, and its activities will be gradually resumed, with volumes adjusted according to the evolution of the national market. This will generate around 300 new direct and indirect job positions.

In August, Gerdau reactivated the steel mill at the Mogi das Cruzes unit in São Paulo. As described by the company, this is a “reflection of the positive prospects for the resumption of the automotive sector in Brazil.” The largest steel producer in Brazil emphasizes that the mill at this unit had been dormant since March 2019 and will operate with an annual capacity of around 180,000 tons of steel. The resumption of steel production activities at the mill in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, is part of Gerdau’s “sustainable growth” cycle, which foresees investments of approximately R$ 1 billion in the modernization and expansion of special steel operations in the country — covering, in addition to the Mogi unit, the production units in Pindamonhangaba — also in São Paulo, and in Charqueadas, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Usiminas President Confirms That Blast Furnace 2 Will Be Reactivated
In a virtually conducted interview, Usiminas President Sergio Leite confirmed the reactivation of Blast Furnace 2. The plant, which has been idle since April last year due to the pandemic, has a production capacity of around two thousand tons of pig iron per day. With the reactivation, many jobs will be created in the city of Ipatinga, in Minas Gerais.
In a press interview, Usiminas President Sergio Leite highlighted that the company has a significant investment plan for this year. Usiminas, which has gone from an almost imminent bankruptcy process to a prominent role in its segment, will make contributions of around R$ 1.5 billion, contributing to job creation in the state of Minas Gerais. The CEO of Usiminas states that there will be hundreds of projects, involving various segments, with the potential to generate thousands of job vacancies.
ArcelorMittal Will Resume Steel Production at the Barra Mansa Plant in Rio de Janeiro
ArcelorMittal will resume operations at the steel mill in Barra Mansa (RJ) in the second half of this year. The venture will still require investments of around R$ 19 million for the maintenance and refurbishment of necessary equipment for the start of production. The resumption of activities at the steel mill, which has been inactive since 2019, is motivated by the increase in market demand for steel and the economic growth prospects for the country. With the reactivation of the area, it is estimated that 100 new direct jobs and 50 indirect jobs will be created.
According to the world’s largest steel producer, present in over 60 countries, the focus of investments at the Barra Mansa plant is primarily to meet the growing demand from the domestic steel market. The investments will be directed towards operational safety and technological projects for the equipment, with resources to restore the entire capture and filtering system of the steel mill and ensure better environmental compliance.
