Structure identified at Scarborough Shoal led Manila to react diplomatically and strengthen defense of its maritime sovereignty
A new diplomatic tension in the South China Sea has once again placed the Philippines and China on opposite sides. The Philippine government took diplomatic measures against Beijing after identifying a floating structure at Scarborough Shoal, an area disputed between the two countries.
The installation, according to the Philippine task force for the South China Sea, measured about 6 by 6 meters and featured what appeared to be an antenna. Recent images from the Armed Forces of the Philippines also indicated that the structure appeared to be manned. The information was released on Tuesday, June 9, by Reuters, with reporting by Mikhail Flores and Nestor Corrales and additional information by Xiuhao Chen in Beijing.
Diplomatic measure reinforces Manila’s reaction
The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs took the diplomatic measures deemed appropriate against China in light of the presence of the structure. For Manila, the installation represents an illegal presence in a sensitive area claimed by the country.

The Philippine government stated that it will continue to take appropriate actions, in accordance with international law and in defense of national interests. The task force also emphasized that the protection of sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction of the Philippines remains a priority.
Structure was seen at the entrance and then inside the lagoon
The structure was initially observed at the entrance of the sandbank of Scarborough Shoal. Later, it appeared inside the lagoon of the same region, which increased the attention of Philippine authorities on the case.
The task force did not inform when the images were captured. However, the Philippine Defense Secretary, Gilberto Teodoro, declared on May 30, during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, that he had received information about the presence of the structure on the sandbank.
Scarborough remains at the center of the maritime dispute
The Philippine government reported that it closely monitors developments and assesses the nature, purpose, and possible implications of the installation. The task force insisted that Scarborough is part of the Philippines and is within its maritime zones recognized by international law.
This position reinforces the strategic importance of the region for Manila. Scarborough Shoal remains one of the most sensitive points of the dispute between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea.
China rebuts accusation and reaffirms sovereignty over Huangyan
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China rejected the Philippine position and reiterated its so-called indisputable sovereignty over Scarborough, which Beijing calls Huangyan Island. The Chinese government also stated that its activities in the region, including scientific research, are legitimate.
During a routine press conference, spokesperson Lin Jian urged the Philippines to cease what he called maritime violations, provocations, and inflammatory propaganda. The statement was made following a question about the diplomatic action announced by Manila.
Diplomatic dispute increases attention on the South China Sea
The episode adds another chapter to the dispute between the Philippines and China over strategic areas in the South China Sea. Manila considers the structure as an illegal presence in an area under its jurisdiction, while Beijing maintains that it has sovereignty over Scarborough and its adjacent waters.
The Philippine task force states that it will continue to assess the developments of the installation. The Chinese response, in turn, shows that the deadlock is likely to remain at the center of diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The future of the dispute in Scarborough
The presence of the floating structure reinforces the complexity of maritime disputes in the South China Sea. The case involves sovereignty, jurisdiction, military monitoring, and diplomatic actions in a region of great geopolitical sensitivity.
Do you believe that the Philippines and China should prioritize diplomatic negotiations to reduce tensions, or does the dispute over Scarborough still tend to generate new episodes of political confrontation?
