Public-Private Partnership Project Seeks to Modernize Local Infrastructure and Allow Operations with Larger Ships
On January 21, 2025, the Portos e Navios website reported that the government of Santa Catarina, in conjunction with the ports of São Francisco do Sul and Itapoá, is developing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project for the dredging of Babitonga Bay.
The initiative aims to increase the port capacity of the region, as well as contribute to improving logistics and strengthening international trade in Santa Catarina.
Intervention Aims to Adjust Draft to Accommodate Larger Ships
According to Rogério Marin, CEO of Tek Trade, the dredging will thus allow the berthing of larger vessels. As a result, local terminals tend to become more competitive.

The project includes mandatory environmental studies, essential to ensure that dredging is done responsibly and with respect for the biodiversity of Babitonga Bay.
The area is one of the most important estuarine zones in the state of Santa Catarina.
PPP Model Aims to Enable Investments and Attract New Business
The adoption of the Public-Private Partnership allows investments to be made more rapidly. Moreover, private resources complement public sector efforts.
With the modernization of infrastructure, the region can attract more companies that depend on port logistics, such as logistics operators, distribution centers, and industries.
The project also aligns with the state strategy to strengthen integration between logistics modes, such as ports, highways, and railways. Furthermore, it seeks to enhance the connectivity of Babitonga Bay with other regions of Brazil and abroad.
It is expected that, with the completion of dredging, the ports of São Francisco do Sul and Itapoá will attract new shipping lines. In addition, this measure should improve cargo flow and, consequently, contribute to the local economy.
