EDF Expands Its Presence in Bahia with the Start of Operations at Serra das Almas Wind Farm, Reinforcing Clean Energy Generation, Innovation, and Competitiveness in the Brazilian Electric Sector
EDF Power Solutions, a subsidiary of the French group EDF, took a decisive step in its expansion strategy in the Brazilian market by commencing commercial operations at the Serra das Almas Wind Farm on November 12, 2025, located in the municipalities of Urandi, Licínio de Almeida, and Jacaraci, in the state of Bahia. According to a report published by Cenário Energia, the complex, consisting of 58 wind turbines, has an installed capacity of 261 megawatts (MW), enough to supply approximately 600,000 households with clean energy.
Serra das Almas: Renewable Power and Regional Impact
This project represents a milestone in wind energy generation in Brazil, consolidating EDF as a leader in providing sustainable and competitive solutions for large consumers in the free energy market. During the peak of construction, 1,300 jobs were created, significantly contributing to the socioeconomic development of the region.
Additionally, the project reinforces the presence of wind energy in the Brazilian energy matrix, which already represents about 13.4% of the national installed capacity, according to data from the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (ABEEólica). Bahia, in turn, leads the state ranking, accounting for more than 28% of the country’s wind generation.

The Serra das Almas is a symbol of the new geography of renewable energy in Brazil.
Competitive and Low-Carbon Energy: EDF’s Proposal
EDF Power Solutions structured the project focusing on energy-intensive customers, offering self-production contracts and supply in the Free Contracting Environment (ACL). This approach allows companies to reduce their energy costs and advance their decarbonization goals.
According to André Salgado, CEO of EDF in Brazil, the start of operations at the Serra das Almas wind farm demonstrates EDF’s competence in energy generation projects and reinforces its commitment to accelerating the energy transition. EDF bets on a model that combines competitiveness and sustainability.
Bahia Leads Investments in Wind Energy Alongside EDF
The choice of Bahia as the location for the new wind farm was not by chance. The state has ideal climatic conditions, with constant winds and established infrastructure to transport production. Additionally, state public policies have encouraged the installation of new projects, attracting companies like EDF.
EDF Power Solutions integrates the global strategy of the EDF group, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050. In Brazil, the company has expanded its work in renewable energy generation projects, energy storage, and digital solutions for consumption management.
The Serra das Almas Wind Farm is part of this plan, which seeks to reduce emissions, diversify sources, and ensure energy security. Furthermore, EDF has invested in monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies, increasing the efficiency of wind turbines and reducing operational costs.
The Role of Wind Energy in the Energy Transition
Wind energy has established itself as one of the main alternatives for decarbonizing the Brazilian electrical matrix. According to the Energy Research Company (EPE), wind power is expected to account for over 20% of the national installed capacity by 2032, particularly in the Northeastern states.
In addition to being a clean and abundant source, wind energy has low operational costs, making it highly competitive in the free market. Projects like those of EDF Power Solutions demonstrate that it is possible to combine profitability and environmental responsibility.
Free Energy Market and Opportunities for Businesses
With the gradual opening of the free energy market in Brazil, companies from various sectors have sought alternatives to reduce costs and increase budget predictability. In this context, self-production through renewable sources, such as wind energy, has gained prominence.
EDF Power Solutions offers tailored solutions for large consumers, allowing them to become partners in plants like the Serra das Almas Wind Farm, ensuring access to clean energy at more competitive prices.
Environmental and Social Benefits of the Serra das Almas Project
In addition to economic and energy gains, the Serra das Almas project brings significant environmental and social benefits. The replacement of fossil sources with wind energy helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Brazil’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
On the social aspect, EDF has implemented professional training programs, prioritized the hiring of local labor, and promoted environmental education actions in surrounding communities.
These initiatives reinforce the role of the energy sector as an agent of social transformation. Clean energy is also synonymous with human development.
The Future of EDF and Renewable Energy in Brazil
The start of operations at the Serra das Almas Wind Farm represents a significant advance for the Brazilian energy sector. With 261 MW of capacity, the project strengthens the renewable matrix, boosts the local economy, and offers competitive solutions for large consumers.
EDF Power Solutions, by investing in Bahia, reaffirms its commitment to wind energy as a vector of transformation. The initiative contributes to the country’s climate goals and positions the company as a leader in the energy transition.
