Elon Musk Unveils Superapp X to Challenge WhatsApp. Space Billionaire Bets on a Superapp That Combines Messaging, Payments, and Digital Services to Rival the Global Leader.
The billionaire Elon Musk revealed his plan to transform X (formerly Twitter) into a superapp capable of directly competing with WhatsApp. The initiative, starting with the launch of XChat, promises to integrate encrypted messaging, unlimited file sharing, and even financial services in partnership with Visa.
According to Musk, the strategy aims to replicate in the West the successful model of Chinese superapps, such as WeChat, which consolidate communication, banking transactions, and even e-commerce into a single platform. In Brazil, the expectation is that the feature will be available as early as 2025.
What Is XChat and How Does It Work
The first step in the transformation is XChat, which expands the basic messaging functions. Unlike WhatsApp, the system will allow the sending of any type of file and will include disappearing messages. Additionally, Musk promises end-to-end encryption, strengthening the app’s security.

Another challenge is user resistance to migrating from established apps. Musk’s credibility, which divides opinions, may also influence large-scale adoption. Nevertheless, the billionaire bets on his capacity for innovation to attract new audiences.

If successful, Musk’s plan could create the first superapp of significant reach in the West, bringing convenience and centralization of services. For companies, this change means a new channel for business, advertising, and direct relationships with customers.
However, experts warn of risks related to excessive data concentration and dependence on a single platform. The balance between innovation and regulation will be crucial in defining the project’s future.
