Considered One of the Largest Companies in the Renewable Energy Sector, EDP Renewables Ensures That More Solar Energy Projects Will Be Developed with Walmart
Many companies are increasingly adopting solar energy in their ventures. A partnership was established this Monday, 13, between the Portuguese company, EDP Renewables, and the multinational, Walmart. The signed projects will be developed at facilities present in seven states in the US. A capacity of 38.3 MW will be generated and distributed in ground-mounted projects and even rooftops. The companies’ expectation mainly aims to guide the multinational towards more sustainable practices, utilizing renewable energy.

What Are the Benefits of the Partnership Between Walmart and EDP Renewables for Solar Energy Projects?
Among the 51 signed projects between the companies that establish the partnership, 39 were signed between 2020 and 2021. In total, seven US states benefited from clean energy, including: Arizona, California, South Carolina, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, and New Jersey. As mentioned earlier, the installed capacity will generate 38.3 MW per year.
With this amount of clean energy being generated, it will be possible to avoid the production and emission into the atmosphere or dumping in landfills of 27.1 tons of carbon dioxide or 9.2 tons of recycled waste. The partnership, which has been in place since 2020, is due to the company’s good planning, considered the fourth-largest producer of renewable energy in the world. Thus, as it involves a supermarket, the best and most viable way to generate solar energy was through ground and rooftop installations.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
For EDP Renewables, “the most recent equipment in terms of environmental innovation will be used; EDPR has been working with Walmart to support the creation of a pioneering ecological solar pollination process, particularly through the ground installation of a set of solar panels at the American multinational’s distribution center in Laurens, South Carolina.”
So far, there is no forecast for when other American states or countries with Walmart branches will also benefit from solar energy installation. However, a renewable energy project led by a large and renowned company in the sector may encourage others to adopt the same plan. Thus, reducing the emission of polluting gases.

It is a Portuguese company, a subsidiary of the Energias de Portugal Group. Despite having its headquarters in Madrid, it operates internationally, including in Brazil. Its projects are recognized, and its reputation is as one of the largest leading companies in the renewable energy sector.
During the execution of a previous project, carried out in 2019, between the solar energy company and Walmart, it was awarded the Solar Builder Magazine Large Scale Project of the Year award. During that year, the distributed generation portfolio of EDPR North America in New Jersey consisted of five solar installations for the Walmart Bayonne Supercenter.
