The Measure Opens the Way for the Grok Artificial Intelligence Model to Be Used by the Federal Government, Including in Sensitive Areas Like National Security.
The company xAI, founded by Elon Musk, has secured one of the most important contracts in its short history. The artificial intelligence startup has just landed an agreement worth up to US$ 200 million with the United States Department of Defense.
The partnership will allow the Grok AI, developed by the company, to be used in various federal agencies.
Grok Now Available to the Entire Government
In addition to the contract with the Pentagon, xAI officially launched the “Grok for Government” package. As a result, any federal agency will be able to acquire and use the company’s products.

Inclusion in the General Services Administration (GSA) schedule facilitates this access and represents an important milestone for the technology’s expansion.
xAI itself stated that this will allow for the provision of solutions for departments ranging from defense to veteran services.
The Grok 4, the most advanced version of the model, will be at the center of the offering. The company highlights that it outperforms competitors in benchmarks and offers features such as Deep Search, tool integration, and customization for national security and scientific applications.
Contract Brings xAI Closer to Established Competitors
With the new agreement, Elon Musk’s company joins names like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, which already have similar contracts with the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO).
The goal of the initiative is to integrate advanced commercial AI solutions into military and intelligence operations.
The sector director, Dr. Doug Matty, stated that the focus is on accelerating the use of AI through integrated capabilities and tools developed by the private sector.
The idea is to leverage the agility and innovation of technology companies to modernize government systems.
As part of the agreement, xAI reported that it will send engineers with security clearances to work directly with the government, ensuring high-level technical support.
Recent Controversies Involving Grok
Despite the progress, the Grok model is not without criticism. In recent weeks, users noted that the xAI chatbot replicated opinions posted by Elon Musk on his social media platform X, even without explicit references to him in the commands.
Additionally, there were reports of interactions in which the system generated responses containing antisemitic content, raising concerns about security, bias, and reliability.
These points become even more sensitive when AI is used in high-stakes federal environments.
A Strategic and Billion-Dollar Bet
Even with the questions raised, the business potential is enormous. Contracts with the government are valuable for securing revenue and helping to validate technology in critical scenarios.
xAI, which was founded after Elon Musk left the board of OpenAI, was valued at US$ 80 billion after raising US$ 6 billion at the end of 2024.
The investment in Grok goes beyond the current contract. The Wall Street Journal revealed that SpaceX, another Musk company, approved a US$ 2 billion investment in xAI.
This is SpaceX’s first known investment in the field of artificial intelligence and one of the largest cross-bets made by the billionaire to date.
With the release of the federal agenda, Grok will be able to be used in environments ranging from military agencies to administrative offices, consolidating xAI’s presence in one of the most strategic sectors of the U.S. government.
