Supporting Sustainability, Generating Jobs and Income for the People of Minas Gerais, EMGD Intends to Deliver Its First Photovoltaic Solar Power Plants by November of This Year and Others by the First Quarter of 2022
The Minas Gerais Distributed Generation Company (EMGD) announced that it intends to deliver its first photovoltaic solar power plants as outlined in the memorandum signed between the Government of Minas Gerais and the company. At the end of 2020, the state government, through Governor Romeu Zema, signed a protocol of intentions that included an investment of R$ 400 million from EMGD to implement 30 plants over the next four years.

The agreement provides for a subsidy of almost half a billion reais and also the delivery of photovoltaic solar power plants in 17 municipalities in the northern region of MG, a more humble part of the federation.
The investments from EMGD will benefit, by November of this year, the cities of Mirabela, Coração de Jesus, and Jequitinhonha, with over 200 direct job openings, generating jobs and income for the population. By the end of next month, employees will be hired for the construction of two more photovoltaic solar power plants in the cities of Minas Novas and Manga, which are slated to be completed in early 2022.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.

According to EMGD’s Operations Director, André Mendonça, all stages of development and execution of the installations have already been contracted. He states that the necessary network works for the connection of the photovoltaic solar power plants have already begun, and if everything goes as planned, they will be operational by the end of this year.
The construction works promise to boost the local economy through direct and indirect services, such as in the food and hospitality sectors. André claims that the company invested about R$ 65 million to apply the latest technology. The photovoltaic plants will feature a tracker system, which moves the panels according to the sun’s position.
The solar power plants, which include bifacial modules, will be capable of increasing energy generation by up to 8%. The plants will have an average capacity of 3.2 MWp and will be able to generate energy for 2,700 households with an average consumption of 200 kWh/month. To achieve this, 30,000 photovoltaic panels were distributed across the five units.
MG Gains Highlight in the Solar Energy Market
Minas Gerais is currently responsible for almost 20% of solar energy generation in Brazil. It leads the ranking published by Aneel, with an installed capacity of 862.9 MW.
This value is greater than the total of the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which are in second and eighth places, respectively. This strength comes from the northern region of MG, which concentrates a large number of photovoltaic plants in Brazil and showcases EMGD’s actions.
