Believing That Offshore Wind Energy Is an Important Step for the Energy Transition, Ocean Winds Plans to Install a New Project in RN
The Secretary of Development Jaime Calado met with representatives from Ocean Winds, José Partida Solano and Mariana, as well as the technical team from the Secretary of Economic Development (Sedec), to discuss the projects involving the company’s offshore wind energy in Rio Grande do Norte (RN).

Founded in 2020, Ocean Winds is responsible for one of the four projects currently undergoing licensing processes with Ibama for the execution of offshore wind energy plants on the RN coast.
The company was created by the merger of Engie Energia and EDP Renováveis, both of which already own onshore wind farms in the state. Recently, Engie submitted its offshore wind energy project to Ibama for the RN coastline, in the São Bento do Norte area.

The investment in the park is at least R$ 25 billion, generating approximately 4,000 jobs during construction and about 1,400 jobs when the project begins operations. Mariana states that the company sees the project as an opportunity for an important step, which is the generation of green hydrogen, as the natural vocations of RN indicate a low-cost production, potentially the lowest in the world in the sector.
Secretary of Economic Development Comments on New Investments in RN
Jaime Calado emphasized that offshore wind energy projects like this still depend on sector regulation and optimistically hopes that the regulation will be finalized this year.
He mentions that this is a great opportunity to approve the senator Jean Paul Prates’ bill, which promises to bring significant legal certainty for entrepreneurs. He highlighted the government of Fátima Bezerra, which has made the renewable energy sector, such as wind energy, a priority, given RN’s natural vocation and excellent capacity. Thus, the Sectoral Energy Chamber was created to address offshore energy generation and green hydrogen.
Meet Ocean Winds
Known as OW, Ocean Winds is a 50/50 joint venture in the offshore wind energy sector, both fixed and floating, created by EDPR and ENGIE at the end of 2019.
OW was born out of the companies’ confidence in believing that offshore wind energy is playing an essential role in the energy transition worldwide, leading to rapid growth in the segment’s competitiveness.
