The Carbon Dioxide Is Used To Store Renewable Energy In The Grid, And The Technology, According To Energy Dome, Can Be Implemented Quickly Anywhere On The Planet
One of the biggest villains causing the greenhouse effect, responsible for global warming, CO2 can be used to promote the energy transition, contributing to achieving carbon neutrality. This is what an Italian company called Energy Dome promises, as it is working on creating a CO2 battery that stores energy using Carbon Dioxide.
It is essential to emphasize that this is not a trivial component, such as a cellphone battery or a car battery. This idea from Energy Dome is expansive in nature and will be supported by a facility composed of several components, such as a dome and containers for storing carbon dioxide.
How The Carbon Dioxide Battery Developed By Energy Dome Works?
The CO2 moves within this structure, transitioning from a gaseous state to a liquid state when extracting energy from the grid, and from a liquid state to a gaseous state when supplying energy to the grid. This process is repeated whenever necessary. The liquid carbon dioxide is then used to store energy when it is not needed.

An “invisible” plant can transform rivers meeting the sea into electricity 24 hours a day: French startup uses nanotechnology to extract energy from the salt difference between fresh and saltwater, without sun, wind, dam, or fuel.
According to the Italian company, one of the most significant benefits of using this technology is that all components necessary for its construction are readily available in the market. This makes it possible to quickly implement the CO2 battery system.
Moreover, due to its properties, CO2 is a fluid capable of storing energy at a low cost and can transition from a gaseous state to a liquid state under pressure while remaining at room temperature. This occurs without the need to bring the temperature to extremely high or low levels, which makes the project even simpler and more accessible.
The CO2 Battery From Energy Dome Is Already Available Commercially To Make Renewable Energy More Cost-Effective On A Global Scale.
The installation, as stated by Energy Dome, does not cause any harm to the location where it is installed and ensures a significant increase in energy efficiency. The first CO2 battery produced by the company was officially launched in Italy in June of this year (2022). This event marked the beginning of the product’s commercialization phase.
At the end of last September, Energy Dome announced a partnership with Ørsted, a renewable energy company. The company will investigate the possibility of installing a CO2 battery with a storage capacity of 20 MW/200 MWh in one of the partner’s renewable parks.
The project development takes into account the potential use of the technology in various scenarios, both in wind and solar parks. The construction of the first CO2 battery in Ørsted’s parks is expected to begin in 2024.
