Green Fleets and Freight 2024 Event Discusses Strategies to Strengthen the CNG Market, Focusing on Heavy Vehicles and Competitive Tariffs.
At the Green Fleets and Freight 2024 Event, held in São Paulo, leaders from various natural gas distribution companies in the Southeast gathered to discuss the future and strengthening of the CNG market. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to share experiences and explore innovative strategies that encourage the use of CNG in heavy vehicles, as well as discuss more competitive tariffs that could make CNG an even more attractive option.
The introduction of new technologies and the adoption of sustainable policies were central themes of the event. The use of Compressed Natural Gas as an efficient energy source was heavily advocated by participants, who view CNG as a viable and cleaner alternative compared to traditional fossil fuels. With this approach, it is expected not only to reduce environmental impact but also to offer significant financial and operational benefits for fleets that adopt this fuel. Additionally, the engagement of distributors is crucial to ensure that CNG becomes a key player in the current sustainable mobility landscape.
Meeting of Representatives in Favor of CNG
Important representatives from hosting companies, including Comgás, ESGás, Necta, Naturgy, and Gasmig, participated. SCGás, the distributor from Santa Catarina, played a special role in the meeting by presenting a new CNG tariff aimed at fleet owners.

The meeting brought to the discussion table a variety of crucial topics for this sector, with the main agenda focusing on joint actions for the strengthening of the CNG market. The focus was particularly on increasing the use of the fuel in heavy vehicles while highlighting the advantages of the fuel for light vehicles.
Strategies and Innovations for the CNG Market
Among the topics discussed were compliance issues and the sharing of strategic information, such as sales volumes, potential customers, and contractual aspects. Additionally, strategies for market expansion and technological innovations that benefit CNG consumers were raised.
They also discussed, during the meeting, contacts with Abegás to access sales data and industry bulletins, the creation of applications aimed at locating stations that offer Compressed Natural Gas, especially on highways. They also considered the possibility of holding fairs and events with joint sponsorship and the inclusion of CNG stations in GPS applications such as Waze.
Promoting Awareness and Expanding Knowledge
A highlight was the proposal to hold a new economy rally aimed at raising public awareness about the multiple advantages of CNG. The idea is for this initiative to occur in collaboration with renowned educational institutions like USP, UFMG, UFRJ, and Unicamp.
Managers also expressed significant concern about the need for a public consultation organized by the Regulatory Agency of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The purpose of this consultation is to address the delicate issue of potential fraud in CNG metering, which affects trust in the sector.
Impact of Tariff Reduction and Pricing Policy
With all these initiatives, distributors hope to not only increase the use of the fuel but also strengthen their image as an efficient and sustainable alternative for various forms of transportation.
In Minas Gerais, according to Welder Souza, Manager of Compressed Natural Gas Marketing, the reduction in the CNG tariff announced in early November is expected to directly impact the prices charged at selling stations. This should increase competitiveness compared to traditional fuels like ethanol, diesel, and gasoline, thereby reducing costs for drivers and companies that rely on CNG in their truck fleets.
Welder highlighted that the pricing policy is in line with the guidelines established by the State Government, aiming to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life for the residents of Minas Gerais.
Contributions of the New CNG Tariffs
The benefits generated by the tariff reduction of CNG should be immediately felt by consumers. ‘Drivers will feel it in their pockets, the savings at the pump’, he stated, referring to the pricing policy. Additionally, he mentioned that, according to Resolution SEDE No. 53, dated 28/12/2023, linking the tariffs of Compressed Natural Gas and Compressed Natural Gas to competitiveness in relation to gasoline, Gasmig will apply an additional discount of R$0.15/m³.
This movement provides significant savings, over 30% for light vehicles and more than 20% for heavy vehicles, thus consolidating the image of CNG as an economical and competitive fuel in the current market.
