Network founded in 1926 in Jaraguá do Sul ceases operations after self-bankruptcy filing, R$ 35 million debt, R$ 165 thousand monthly losses, and almost a century of presence in Santa Catarina retail

The supermarket chain Breithaupt, founded in 1926 in Jaraguá do Sul, announced the definitive cessation of operations in 2026 after formalizing a self-bankruptcy request due to irreversible financial unviability.

Self-bankruptcy ends the trajectory of Breithaupt supermarkets

The end of activities concludes the history of one of the most traditional brands in Santa Catarina retail. The company reached its limit after financial strain, unit reduction, and operational loss.

The request came in the face of an accumulated liability of R$ 35 million. Even reduced to three physical stores, the chain still recorded monthly losses of approximately R$ 165 thousand.

Insufficient scale and competitive pressure prevented the maintenance of operations. With less bargaining power with suppliers, the group lost the ability to compete with larger chains.

35 square meter store became a reference

The trajectory began in 1926, when brothers Walter and Arthur Breithaupt opened a small dry goods and general store in Jaraguá do Sul. The property was only 35 square meters.

The business grew by serving German immigrant colonies. The store sold everything from brown sugar to fine china and became part of the commercial routine of northern Santa Catarina.

In the following decades, the group expanded its operations to include rail transport of goods between São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul.

In the 80s, the headquarters was converted into a large supermarket. The change consolidated the brand as a consumption reference for families in the region.

Judicial recovery did not prevent collapse

The first public signs of strain appeared in August 2020, when the group sought legal protection to reorganize its debts. Judicial recovery became an attempt to keep the company active.

The plan was approved by the TJSC in 2022. Still, the chain failed to attract the necessary capital injections to recover financial health and sustain operations.

The reduction to three units did not bring balance. The company continued to operate at a loss, with narrow margins and pressure from larger competitors.

In 2013, the sale of part of the supermarkets had already marked a strategic divestment. The measure was not enough to contain indebtedness or restore stability to the company.

Timeline shows rise and fall

In 1926, the first dry goods and general store emerged in Jaraguá do Sul. In 1970, construction materials and toys followed.

In 1986, the large supermarket was inaugurated at the main headquarters. In 1999, the group’s first shopping center opened on the same original plot.

The transformation kept the original headquarters as the center of operations for decades.

In 2025, the self-bankruptcy filing and the official cessation of remaining activities occurred.

Local impact and Santa Catarina legacy

The closure affects employees and regional suppliers who had maintained commercial ties with the group for generations. The brand still held emotional and historical value in Jaraguá do Sul, Joinville, and Timbó.

The case reflects challenges faced by medium-sized family businesses in Brazil. The concentration in large national chains and the advancement of e-commerce created narrow margins for businesses with old liabilities.

Jaraguá do Sul is recognized as a dynamic industrial hub. The fall of a local symbol like Breithaupt serves as a warning for the need for continuous structural renewal in services.

Despite the melancholic outcome, Breithaupt supermarkets leave a cultural and professional influence on Southern retail.

The company was a gateway for thousands of young Santa Catarina residents into the job market.

The group also helped shape consumption habits in the region. The closure marks a significant chapter in Santa Catarina’s business history and exposes the limits of corporate longevity in the face of systemic crises.
