At The Lide Business Forum, Experts Highlight That Brazil Can Advance Simultaneously in Oil and Renewables, Reinforcing Its Strategic Role in The Global Energy Matrix
The exploration of fossil fuels will continue to grow in Brazil, even amidst the expansion of renewable sources. This assessment was presented by representatives of companies and experts at the 24th Lide Business Forum, held this Friday (August 22, 2025) in Rio de Janeiro.
Energy Complementarity
Cristiano Pinto da Costa, president of Shell Brazil, stated that the country has unique conditions to advance on two fronts. “Brazil is one of the very few countries that can advance with both oil and biofuels. It’s not one or the other form of energy,” he said.
The most important thing, according to him, is to view the sector as complementary and not as competitors. Costa also warned of the risk of a decline in domestic production starting in the mid-2030s, if new areas are not explored.

Historical Context
David Zylbersztajn, former president of the National Petroleum Agency, emphasized that the relevance of fossil fuels does not end with the energy transition.
“Oil surpassed coal as the primary global energy source in the 1960s. Even so, coal production in 2024 was four times that of 1960,” he recalled.
Therefore, according to him, history shows that older sources do not disappear quickly. The trend is for energy matrices to overlap over time.
Oil in Brazil: Competitive Advantage
Roberto Gianetti, head of Lide Foreign Trade, highlighted that Brazilian oil production has environmental differentials.
“Oil production in Brazil is a cleaner process than in other countries, with a smaller carbon footprint,” he stated.
In his view, this could be an important competitive advantage for Brazil to gain space in the international energy market.
