Moroccan Start-Up ATAREC Aims to Explore Wave Energy to Provide Electricity, with WaveBeat Technology and Tidal Turbines, Already Operating at the Port of Tanger-Med.

The Moroccan company Advanced Third Age Renewable Energies Company (ATAREC) emerged from the vision of two engineers with the aim of exploring the vast potential of wave energy. Its large-scale demonstrator is already installed and operational at the port of Tanger-Med, one of the largest ports in Africa and the Mediterranean Sea.

Founded by Mohamed Taha El Ouaryachi and Oussama Nour, the ATAREC start-up is on a mission to create sustainable and green energy solutions. They developed the wave energy device called WaveBeat, demonstrating their commitment to renewable energy sources and the future of energy production.

Developing WaveBeat Technology for Capturing Wave Energy

Seeing wave energy more as an opportunity than a challenge, the engineers designed their patented WaveBeat technology to capture vertical variations in sea level using a floating buoy, transforming the natural movement of water into sustainable and renewable energy.

‘The development process for WaveBeat involved meticulous studies and design, followed by numerical simulations that allowed us to define the efficiency range and encouraged us to continue the journey with very promising performance indicators.

Prototyping at the Port of Tanger-Med and Strategic Partnerships

‘After that, we moved on to the prototyping phase with our first partner – the Port of Tanger-Med – in northern Morocco, which proved to be very challenging, but also allowed us to validate the performance.

‘The manufacturing of the prototype components was carried out with the support of many partners around the world, followed by on-site assembly, installation, and continuous performance monitoring to ensure optimal functionality’, said Taha El Ouaryachi in an interview for Offshore Energy.

Expansion and Potential of Wave Energy Technology

The prototype development, carried out during 2020 and 2021, was followed by the construction of a more advanced demonstrator, with an estimated power output of about 7kW.

According to Taha El Ouaryachi, the focus here was to prove the entire electricity conversion system in a real marine environment – including the power take-off (PTO) – with network optimization functions, as well as testing other proprietary features of WaveBeat technology.

The Port of Tanger-Med as the Preferred Location for Wave Energy Technology

The developers selected the Port of Tanger-Med, located 45 km northeast of the city of Tangier, in the Strait of Gibraltar, as the preferred location due to the support and long-standing relationship that ATAREC has formed with the port.

‘We chose the Port of Tanger-Med for several reasons, namely: our relationship with them has been developed over many years, and we trust them as our strategic partner – which is the key factor moving forward.

International Expansion and Sustainable Energy Potential

The main focus of ATREC for its WaveBeat wave energy technology currently lies in providing sustainable energy solutions for ports and maritime infrastructure, as the technology is designed in such a way that it makes it particularly suitable for port environments while being cost-competitive.

The company believes that starting with market segments where wave energy is most attractive is the most logical step at this moment, but the reach of ATAREC’s wave energy technology could be expanded in the future.

Funding Challenges and Strategic Partnerships

Technology start-ups, especially those in emerging sectors, often consume a lot of money and take a long time to transition from the R&D stage to revenue-generating companies.

However, start-ups require other sources of funding, with fundraising being one of the available options that has already been undertaken by ATAREC.
