The Evaluation Tests Were Successful Despite Some Operational Issues at the Well Located 2052 Meters Deep

Equinor discovered a rich vein of hydrocarbons in the evaluation well at West Carcará, where the flow test was conducted last week. The rig, located in the pre-salt production sharing contract area in northern Carcará, faced some challenges. Equinor came close to losing focus after losing, and failing to retrieve, a downhole assembly, but the operator was able to perform the drill stem test as previously planned.

A formal notification of an oil discovery was issued on December 27, according to Brazilian regulatory requirements.

Additional information gathered from sources close to the operation suggests that the discovery has all the characteristics of a significant oil discovery in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin.

The well, which was located at a water depth of 2052 meters, was drilled to a target depth of 6700 meters by the drilling vessel owned by Seadrill West Saturn.

Equinor is planning to drill another evaluation well in the eastern part of the North Carcará block before the end of this month.

The two wells aim to provide additional information to assist Equinor in concluding the unitization of North Carcará in the main section, located in the former concession BM-S-8.

Equinor and the project partners from ExxonMobil in the U.S. and Galp Energia from Portugal are working to reassess the recoverable reserves and more remote regions in Carcará, where recoverable estimates so far point to about 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

Equinor has been working on engineering arrangements and pre-front-end design before the planned bids for a large FPSO and an associated subsea production system.
