Cargo Theft Report Predicts Increase in Occurrences in 2024
Cargo transport in Brazil faces several obstacles that can put both the transported goods and the lives of drivers working on the roads at risk. The continental dimensions of the country are among the main challenges.
The territorial extension and geographical diversity hinder access to some regions, causing many roads to lack good infrastructure, which can result in precarious conditions for cargo transport and accidents. According to the National Transport Confederation, more than half of Brazil’s highways are in regular, poor, or terrible condition.
Fabio Marton, director general of Overhaul Brazil, a global risk management and logistics visibility company independent of devices, also points out that there are not enough safe stops for drivers, and in remote areas, another challenge is the connectivity that can hinder communication and the efficient exchange of information. “With so many risks on the roads, some actions and technological solutions are essential to provide visibility to transport, ensuring that the cargo is delivered on time and without incidents,” he states.

Cargo Theft
In addition to the challenges related to the territorial extension of the country and infrastructure, cargo theft is another serious problem. According to data from the “Cargo Theft Report”, prepared by Overhaul’s Intelligence Center, the country recorded more than 18,000 cargo theft events between January and December 2023 and is expected to grow even more in 2024.
“Road transport continues to be the primary mode for cargo transport, and as a result, the infrastructure continues to face challenges of lack of maintenance and security. With this scenario, the resumption of the economy, and the warming of the logistics sector, we can expect an increase in the number of cargo thefts in 2024,” reveals Overhaul’s Intelligence Manager, Reginaldo Catarino.
High-value cargoes, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and fuels, are the most targeted. “To deal with these risks, it is essential that companies adopt robust security practices, invest in technologies and training, and be aware of the specific conditions of the routes and regions in which they operate. Additionally, collaboration with authorities and joint actions between companies in the sector can contribute to the overall improvement of safety in cargo transport in Brazil,” reveals the Intelligence Manager.
To ensure the safety of goods and the people involved, specialists offer some tips to increase safety in cargo transport:
Route Planning:
Plan safe routes, avoiding high-risk areas.
Utilize updated navigation systems that provide real-time information on traffic conditions and safety alerts.
Driver Training:
Proper handling of cargo
Safe driving and defensive driving practices
Preventive maintenance
First aid
Preventive Maintenance of Vehicles
Regularly check the condition of tires, brakes, lights, wipers, etc.
Conduct preventive maintenance
Real-Time GPS Tracking
Real-time monitoring helps in rapid recovery in case of theft and provides important information for logistics management.
Security Technology:
Install surveillance cameras in vehicles to record activities around.
Consider the use of security devices, such as electronic locks and alarm systems.
Efficient Communication:
Establish efficient communication channels between drivers, logistics teams, and security authorities.
Encourage immediate reporting of incidents or suspicious activities.
Finally, Fabio Marton warns that “safety in cargo transport is a comprehensive approach that involves various aspects, so combining technology, training, monitoring, and cooperation is essential to mitigate risks and ensure safe operations.”
