The Expected Green Hydrogen Projects Will Be Announced at a Future Event, with a Date Still to Be Disclosed by the Government of Ceará
On Tuesday (09/21), according to the Diário do Nordeste website, the Secretary of Economic Development of Ceará, Maia Júnior, stated that the state is ready to sign five more investment memorandums for the green hydrogen hub in the State. The expected green hydrogen projects will be announced at a future event, with a date still to be disclosed by the Government. The State Government Has Closed a Deal with Neoenergia
Governor Camilo Santana signed a memorandum between the Government of Ceará and Neoenergia, a company controlled by the Spanish group Iberdrola, for the implementation of an urban mobility project using vehicles for public transport powered by green hydrogen. In the “Green Corridor” project, Fortaleza will be the first city in Brazil to use green hydrogen in municipal public transport, utilizing fuel cell buses. The pilot will take place in the state capital, and the goal is to reach 18 clean energy refueling points.
Green hydrogen (H2V) is produced from renewable sources and is currently considered a pillar of global energy transformation as it can be obtained through the electrolysis of water, a carbon-free source.

“Green hydrogen is the energy of the future, and this Neoenergia project is a pioneering idea and is part of the global construction of renewable energies, and we will be part of the planet’s decarbonization. It is a condition that cannot be reversed. They (Iberdrola) are already building their green hydrogen plant in Spain, and that is why we are signing the memorandum now,” explained Camilo Santana, Governor of Ceará.
Ceará Will Receive the First Hydrogen Plant. R$ 41.9 Million Project Will Begin Operations in 2022
EDP announced on 09/01 the implementation of its first green hydrogen production plant in the state of Ceará. The expectation is that the pilot unit will start operating by the end of 2022 at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex. The project will receive investments of R$ 41.9 million, which includes a solar plant with a capacity of 3 MW and an electrolyzer module for fuel production from renewable energy. The modular unit will have the capacity to produce 250 Nm3/h of H2V.
In a live broadcast on social media, Governor Camilo Santana announced, alongside the EDP Brasil board, the installation of the pilot project for the implementation of a green hydrogen plant in Pecém, with a gas production capacity of 250 Nm3/h. The Governor of Ceará celebrated that the state is becoming the home of green hydrogen.
Camilo stated, “We are pleased to receive the news that the multinational EDP Brasil will make an investment of almost R$ 42 million in green hydrogen in Brazil by announcing that Ceará will have the first green hydrogen plant in the country. We have been heavily investing in this clean energy, and EDP already generates more than 350 direct jobs in Ceará at the Pecém Port with its thermoelectric plant, which produces almost half of the energy consumption of the entire state.”
The new green hydrogen plant will be installed at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex; the plant will be the group’s first, with a capacity of 3 MW and a state-of-the-art electrolyzer module for production of fuel with guaranteed renewable origin. The modular unit will have the capacity to produce 250 Nm3/h of gas. The hydrogen plant project was presented by EDP’s CEO in Brazil, João Marques da Cruz.
