With 11 km in length, 99 hairpin turns, and a breathtaking climb up to 1,300 meters in altitude, the most winding road in the world is a true challenge for the bravest.

The experience offered by the Tianmen Mountain Road, in Hunan Province, China, is widely known as the most winding road in the world. The route, affectionately called the “Avenue to Heaven,” is a masterpiece that challenges drivers and enchants tourists.

Stretching 11 kilometers, the road starts at 200 meters above sea level and rises to an impressive 1,300 meters. The journey, in addition to being winding, is an engineering feat that took seven years to complete and cost over 100 million yuan. But the effort was worth it: the result is one of the most intriguing and terrifying destinations on the planet.

The 99 Turns of the Tianmen Mountain Road

The most winding road in the world has 99 hairpin turns. Each turn is a true test of skill for the driver. Over 11 km, the route winds through cliffs and incredible landscapes. It seems like the curves never end, creating a unique and challenging experience!

The Tianmen Mountain Road resembles a dragon winding around the mountain slopes. Each hairpin turn challenges drivers to maintain concentration as they slowly ascend toward the summit. The tourist buses that traverse the route are driven by experienced drivers, who display impressive skill in handling this road.

Built between 1998 and 2005, the road is an example of how modern engineering can adapt to nature. The steep cliffs and lush vegetation create a stunning backdrop, but also present a significant challenge for construction and maintenance of the route.

Why Is the Tianmen Mountain Road So Famous?

It is no wonder that the road is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. Despite this, many tourists dream of facing the curves of the most winding road in the world and witnessing the stunning scenery it offers.

For those who do not feel comfortable driving on these challenging turns, the Tianmen cable car is an excellent alternative. Built by the French company Poma, the cable car covers a distance of 7,455 meters, climbing an elevation of 1,279 meters. During the ride, it is possible to have an incredible aerial view of the road and the cliffs.

Incredible Attractions at the Top of Tianmen Mountain

Upon reaching the top, you will find the Heaven Gate, a natural stone arch that stands 131.5 meters tall. To reach it, you must climb 999 steps, known as the Stairway to Heaven. This number, loaded with symbolism, is part of Chinese culture and is a must-see for visitors.

At the mountain’s summit, trails have been constructed along the edges of the cliffs, including sections with glass flooring. Walking along these trails is an exhilarating experience, with spectacular views showcasing the natural beauty of the region and the winding road below.
