Brazilian Army Strengthens Its Artillery with the Acquisition of 36 ATMOS 155mm Systems from Israel, Aiming to Modernize Its Forces and Enhance National Defensive Capacity.
After an extensive selection and analysis process, the Brazilian Army chose the ATMOS 155mm artillery system, developed in Israel, to strengthen its defensive capacity. The decision follows the evaluation of several 155 mm artillery models, with the ATMOS selected for its superior efficiency and technical capability.
Initially, 36 artillery vehicles will be acquired, divided into two batches: one evaluation prototype with two units and the remaining 34 after approval by the Army. The delivery of the vehicles will be spread over eight years, following a plan that allows compatibility with available resources and the needs of the Army’s armored units. Each of the three groups of divisional artillery or mechanized brigades will receive 12 vehicles, totaling three batteries per group.
A Crucial Aspect of the Agreement for the Acquisition of 36 ATMOS 155mm Artillery Systems from Israel Is Strengthening the National Defense Industrial Base
A crucial aspect of the agreement is strengthening the national defense industrial base. Established priorities include local production of 155mm ammunition, both standard and special, assurance of parts, and a training simulator system for crews. The company Ares, based in Rio de Janeiro, and the AEL Sistemas group from Porto Alegre will be essential, providing technical support and maintaining the complex vehicle systems.

Initial Tests of the ATMOS 155mm System Will Be Conducted in Israel Before Being Sent to the Brazilian Army
The initial tests of the ATMOS 155mm system will be conducted in Israel before being sent to Brazil for final testing at the Army Evaluation Center (CAX). The contract signing for the pilot batch is scheduled for the next day 07, with the delivery of the first units expected in the first half of 2025. After the system’s acceptance by the Army, the acquisition of the other units will proceed. There is also the expectation of future acquisitions due to the growing demand for these artillery systems.
The choice of the ATMOS 155mm system is a milestone in modernizing the Brazilian Army’s artillery capabilities, ensuring a more effective response in terms of defense and military operations. Strengthening these capabilities is essential in a complex global context, where the efficiency and continuous modernization of armed forces are crucial for national security.
