The Brazilian Army Is Advancing In Negotiations To Acquire The Akash Anti-Aircraft Missile System From India, A Measure That Seeks To Modernize And Strengthen National Air Defense In The Face Of Growing Global Conflicts And Fill A Significant Gap In The Country’s Medium And Long Range Defense Capacity.

The Brazilian Army, recognizing a significant gap in its air defense, is now taking concrete steps to address this deficiency. With a vast territory and an extensive land and maritime border to protect, the country faces significant logistical challenges that require a robust response in terms of air defense. The lack of medium and long-range defense systems has been a critical vulnerability for national security.

During a recent hearing in the Commission on Foreign Relations and National Defense of the Chamber of Deputies, General Tomás Paiva, commander of the Army, highlighted negotiations with India for the acquisition of the Akash system. This system is notable for its ability to intercept aircraft and missiles at medium altitudes, offering a much broader coverage than Brazil’s current capabilities.
