Explosion and Fire on the Oil Platform Akal Bravo, Operated by Pemex in the Gulf of Mexico, Result in Catastrophic Accident, It Is Estimated That There Were 28 Workers on Site and 14 Were Injured.
An explosion followed by a fire devastated the oil platform Akal Bravo, located in the Gulf of Mexico, causing one of the largest environmental disasters in the region. The incident, which occurred on the afternoon of April 6, led to the collapse of the offshore facility, with 14 workers reported injured, as updated at 10 a.m. on that Sunday (07) by PEMEX (Petróleos Mexicanos).
The disaster began with a sudden explosion on the deepwater drilling platform, followed by a fire that ravaged the structure for over a day. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the causes of the explosion and assess safety measures in the operation of oil platforms in Mexico.
State-Owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) Operated the Oil Platform
The platform, operated by the state-owned company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), is part of the Cantarell complex in the sounding of Campeche, a crucial region for oil production in Mexico. The incident not only triggered a significant mobilization of emergency resources but also raised alarms about safety and environmental impacts of offshore oil exploration in the country.

About the Cantarell Project, Home to the Akal Bravo Platform, Located off the Coast of Campeche State, Mexico
The Cantarell project, located in the territorial waters of the Continental Shelf of the Gulf of Mexico, is strategically positioned between 40 and 50 meters deep, about 80 kilometers from Ciudad del Carmen, in Campeche. This project is notable for its proximity to important production assets and oil fields, including Ku Maloob Zaap to the northwest, Ek-Balam to the east, and the Southwestern Marine Region to the west.
It consists of significant fields such as Akal, Chac, Ixtoc, Kambesah, Kutz, Nohoch, Sihil, and Takín, outlining the scope and importance of Cantarell in the Mexican energy industry. The planning for Cantarell through 2027 aims to achieve an impressive cumulative production of 1,592.8 million barrels of oil and 938.4 billion cubic feet of gas, with a planned investment of 306.339 million pesos.
This ambitious exploration plan includes drilling 130 development wells and one injection well, major interventions such as 145 repairs and 8 conversions for injection wells, in addition to 1,476 minor repairs and 288 blockages. The construction of 6 production platforms, one process oil platform, installation of tripod-type structures, and the construction of 34 pipelines for fluid transportation is also planned.
