On the night of last Monday (23), residents of Brasília were surprised by an impressive scene: a fireball crossed the sky of the capital and transformed darkness into a flash for a few seconds.
The recording, made by a security camera in Gama, went viral on social media and generated curiosity across the country.
The images show the exact moment when the dark sky suddenly lights up, followed by a luminous explosion visible to the naked eye. “I thought it was a transformer blowing up,” commented a user on X (formerly Twitter). Another wrote: “I thought it was the end of the world.”

The largest scientific infrastructure ever built in Brazil cost R$ 2.8 billion and now gains four new lines to reveal materials, microchips, and even microorganisms at the atomic scale; meet Sirius.
The scene was quickly shared by profiles specializing in astronomy and sparked theories among users. However, the phenomenon has a scientific explanation.
According to Professor Adriano Leonês, an astronomer at the University of Brasília (UnB), the flash was caused by a bolide, a type of meteor that explodes upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere. “The explosion occurs when the object reaches extremely high speeds and its volatile materials ignite due to friction with atmospheric gases,” he explained.
Phenomena like this are common, but rarely are they as visible in urban areas as they were in Brasília.
The intensity and brilliance made many think it was something more serious. Fortunately, it was just another natural spectacle that took the internet by storm.
