ExxonMobil Reveals New Natural Gas Reserve in Cyprus, Strengthening Energy Presence in the Region. Discovery at Well Pegasus-1 Could Boost the Sector.
A consortium led by ExxonMobil announced on Monday (7) the discovery of a new natural gas reserve off the southern coast of Cyprus. The information was confirmed by the Cypriot government, after drilling at Well Pegasus-1 found a reservoir approximately 350 meters thick at a depth of 1.9 kilometers.
The drilling took place in an area known as Block 10, where the company had previously made another discovery in past years. The new reserve reinforces Cyprus’s strategic role on the Mediterranean energy map, attracting international attention.
Gas Reserve Expands Energy Potential of the Mediterranean
The new natural gas reserve was identified at Well Pegasus-1, drilled by a partnership between ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy.

According to the Cypriot government’s spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, “further assessment will be necessary in the coming months to analyze the results.”

The president of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has already been officially informed about the discovery.
The expectation is that this new energy source will help strengthen Europe’s energy security, which has been seeking to diversify its sources after the supply crisis caused by geopolitical conflicts.
ExxonMobil Advances in Block 10 with Second Gas Discovery
This is the second time that ExxonMobil has found natural gas in Block 10 of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The first discovery occurred in February 2019, at Well Glaucus-1.
Three years later, the appraisal well Glaucus-2 confirmed the presence of a high-quality gas reservoir, solidifying the region’s potential.
These consecutive discoveries indicate that Block 10 could be an important source of natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Furthermore, they increase the chances of investments and infrastructure development in exploration in the coming years.
Natural Gas in Cyprus
Although Cyprus has recorded several discoveries of natural gas along its southern coast, exploration faces technical and political challenges.
The region is marked by tensions between neighboring countries and disputes over exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Even so, the presence of large companies like ExxonMobil lends greater credibility to the projects and signals that the country could play a significant role in Europe’s energy transition.
Natural gas is seen as a strategic alternative to coal and oil, representing a less polluting source.
Despite the optimism, the coming months will be crucial to confirm the true potential of the new reserve.
Additional seismic studies and production tests will need to be conducted to understand the commercial viability of the discovered gas.
In the meantime, ExxonMobil and its partners continue to monitor and evaluate the results. If the productivity of the reservoir is confirmed, Cyprus could attract new international investments in the energy sector.
