Measures Of Precaution Were Taken While The Ship Sailed Through An Area Known For Piracy Activities In Southeast Asia!

During its inaugural voyage around the world, the cruise ship Queen Anne, from the British company Cunard, crossed an area known for piracy risks, the Sulu-Celebes Sea, between Australia and the Philippines. This location is described as a “hotspot for crime, piracy, and terrorism” by the International Center for Counter-Terrorism. Historically, the region has faced several incidents of piracy, including kidnappings and attacks on commercial vessels.

Security Guidelines For Passengers

Before entering this high-risk area, the captain of the ship made an announcement over the loudspeaker, informing that the vessel would operate at a “heightened security alert level”.

As a precaution, passengers were instructed to close the curtains and turn off the lights in their cabins when not needed.

This measure aimed to minimize the visibility of the ship during the crossing through the high-risk area.

The captain also emphasized the importance of following all instructions given by the crew to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

Measures Taken During The Crossing

The outdoor decks were closed at night, with only essential deck lights remaining on.

The Cunard company, in a statement to Business Insider, stated that there were no specific threats to the ship or its guests. They emphasized that, as part of standard maritime procedures, captains may make precautionary announcements when navigating through certain regions.

Furthermore, the crew of the Queen Anne is trained to handle emergency situations and has strict safety protocols in place.

History Of Pirate Attacks

Although the threat of pirate attacks in the region was downgraded to “low” in January 2025, the history of incidents, including ransom kidnappings primarily carried out by the Abu Sayyaf group, justifies the caution exercised during the voyage.

In recent years, piracy in the Sulu-Celebes Sea area has been a persistent problem, with several vessels being targeted in attacks.

The presence of naval forces from different countries, including international patrols, has been a response to this situation, but the threat is still considered relevant.

The Ship Queen Anne

The Queen Anne is the fourth luxury cruise ship from Cunard, with a capacity of 2,996 guests and 1,225 crew members.

On board, passengers can enjoy thousands of pieces of art and various facilities for activities, such as archery and pickleball.

The ship offers a high-end experience, with gourmet restaurants, luxurious spas, and world-class entertainment options.

The ship’s inaugural voyage began in Germany in January and will last for 111 nights, exploring destinations around the world.

Commitment To Safety On Board

With these precautions, Cunard aims to ensure the safety of everyone on board, even in regions known for their threats.

The company also maintains constant communication with local and international maritime authorities to monitor the situation in the region.

In addition, additional security measures, such as the use of tracking and monitoring technology, are implemented to protect the ship and its passengers during the crossing.

The safety of passengers is a priority for Cunard, which strives to provide an unforgettable and safe cruise experience.

In a world where cyber and physical threats are constantly evolving, the commitment to safety is essential to ensure that travelers can enjoy their vacations worry-free.

Cunard, with its long tradition of excellence in the cruise industry, continues to innovate and adapt its safety practices to stay ahead of modern threats.
