Insane Journey: Young Man Drives a Fiat Marea to North Korea’s Border and Crosses Asia Fearlessly. The Story That Conquered Social Media

Who would have thought that one of Fiat’s most underrated cars, the controversial Marea, would return to the spotlight in 2025 — not in a repair shop, but strong on an insane journey across continents. The person behind this feat is Fábio Belnome, a young Spanish content creator who decided to embark on a film-worthy adventure: driving his Fiat Marea from Spain to Japan.

The achievement, which lasted three months and covered more than 30 countries, was documented in real-time on his Instagram and TikTok profiles, where he already has over 1.2 million followers. With relaxed videos and behind-the-scenes moments of the adventure, Fábio showed that the Marea’s reputation as a “lemon” may not be so justified after all.

A Marea Prepared for Anything

Before hitting the road, Belnome had to transform his Marea into a true home on wheels. The car was fitted with two 20-liter fuel cans, a spare tire, sleeping space, and underwent a complete overhaul. Inside, he removed the passenger seat and installed a makeshift mattress on top of a suitcase, a solution that allowed him to endure even the coldest nights in Siberia without resorting to hotels.

The trip, however, was not without challenges. According to what he reported in one of his videos, the car had mechanical failures at various moments, requiring unexpected stops for repairs at local garages. Additionally, the costs of fuel, food, and bureaucracies such as visas and customs fees weighed heavily on his budget.

“Even when the car broke down or I had to sleep at gas stations, I never thought about giving up,” Belnome told the Spanish website Motor.es in an interview.

Eastward Bound: Challenges on the Way

The route from Europe to Japan is not simple. Besides the long distances, the journey requires caution in several tense regions. Fábio even drove close to the border with North Korea and in areas with poor infrastructure.

Another critical point was the extreme cold. During the crossing through Siberia, the Marea faced sub-zero temperatures. To maintain comfort, Fábio insulated part of the car and improvised a basic heating system.

In total, the young Spaniard estimates he spent about 10,000 euros on fuel, maintenance, and general expenses.

From Shelved Car to Social Media Star

Interestingly, the story of this Fiat Marea almost ended much earlier than the trip. After a previous expedition to Norway, Fábio raffled the car among his followers, but no one showed up to claim it. The Marea sat stored for months until the creator decided to use it for one last adventure.

This bold gamble ended up becoming a success story. The videos went viral and helped reignite interest in a model that, in Brazil, carries a reputation for being problematic.

The Controversial Fiat Marea: Villain or Wronged?

Launched in 1998 in Brazil, the Fiat Marea arrived in sedan and wagon (Marea Weekend) versions to replace the Fiat Tempra. It promised to compete with rivals such as Chevrolet Vectra, Ford Mondeo, and Volkswagen Passat.

Despite its modern design and good performance, the car quickly gained a reputation as a problematic machine. Many owners faced mechanical failures and expensive maintenance. The Marea was even nicknamed “lemon,” a stigma that remains today.

On the other hand, experts point out that many of these problems arose due to inadequate maintenance. “The Marea was a sophisticated car for its time but required care that the Brazilian market, at the time, wasn’t prepared to offer,” explains automotive journalist Boris Feldman.

Production was halted in 2007, and the model was succeeded by the Fiat Linea in 2008. Today, the Marea survives as a cult classic, with a loyal fan base defending its qualities.

A Symbol of Resilience

Fábio Belnome’s journey proves that, in the right hands, the Fiat Marea can still surprise. Robustness and performance are hallmarks of the Italian design — as long as maintenance requirements are respected.

The story also highlights how social media can reverse perceptions. A car that was once the subject of jokes in repair shops has now become an icon of a global adventure, inspiring other young people to seek their own paths.
