A Polemic Proposal Could Change How Brazilians Experience Their Holidays. Deputy Suggests Transferring Weekday Holidays to Sundays, Citing Economic Harms. What Does This Mean for You? Learn More About the Pros and Cons of This Idea That Promises to Transform Daily Life and Labor Rights in the Country.

Imagine a Brazil where traditional holidays, like Independence Day or Carnival, are no longer a long break in the middle of the week but are automatically transferred to Sundays.

This proposal, which is already generating intense debates, comes from Federal Deputy Marcos Pollon (PL-MS) and promises to reconfigure how Brazilians enjoy their days off.

The justification? Increase the country’s economic competitiveness and reduce the financial impacts caused by the halt of productive activities.

Understand Deputy Marcos Pollon’s Proposal

The initiative by Marcos Pollon, initially presented as a bill in 2023, is now emerging as a Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC).

The main goal is simple: transfer national holidays that fall during the week to the following Sunday.

The main points of the PEC text include:

  • Mandatory transfer of holidays to the following Sunday.
  • End of optional holidays in public institutions, while the private sector may decide whether to operate or not.
  • In the case of transferred holidays, public institutions will have normal working hours.

According to Pollon, holidays in the middle of the week cause significant harm to the national economy, especially for sectors like commerce, industry, and services.

He states that “the interruption in the production schedule increases the operational cost for companies, and the one who pays for it is the final consumer”.

The Economic Impacts of Holidays

As the deputy explained, the stoppage on holidays results in losses to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and job creation.

He emphasizes that by interrupting business operations and closing stores, productive sectors suffer direct impacts, compromising their revenues.

“Each holiday represents a burden on the companies’ cash flow, whether in operational costs or in reduced productivity,” explained Pollon in an interview with CNN Brasil.

For him, transferring holidays to Sundays would be a way to balance the worker’s rest with the need to keep the economy active.

Complementary Proposals and Controversies

While Marcos Pollon’s proposal focuses on transferring holidays, another recent PEC, presented by Deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP), discusses ending the 6×1 work schedule.

Despite being different in their essence, both proposals have sparked heated debates about how to balance labor rights with economic productivity.

In addition, Pollon is also seeking support for a PEC nicknamed “PEC of Double Salary”, which aims to eliminate taxes related to the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT) and, supposedly, increase the average earnings of workers.

Criticisms and Reactions to the Holiday PEC

Although Pollon defends that the measure is essential to reduce economic losses, opponents argue that holidays represent more than just rest; they carry significant historical, cultural, and religious meanings.

Economists also disagree on the real impacts.

While some acknowledge that productivity could increase with fewer interruptions, others point out that sectors like tourism and leisure, which directly depend on holidays, could suffer significant losses.

In the labor field, unions have raised concerns about the right to rest and the quality of life of workers.

After all, turning holidays into Sundays may limit possibilities for travel, celebrations, and family moments, generating social discontent.

The Future of Holidays in Brazil

Despite the controversies, the Holiday PEC is still in the signature collection phase and must overcome several legislative steps before being approved.

If it progresses, the daily life of Brazilians may undergo significant changes, both at work and in leisure.

In the meantime, the proposal continues to generate intense debates on the best way to balance economic interests with citizens’ rights.

And what do you think? Do holidays during the week really harm Brazil or are they part of our culture and deserve to be preserved?
