Sealion 05 reinforces BYD’s offensive in the Chinese market with plug-in hybrid and electric versions, much higher than average range, fast charging, advanced technological package, and potential to become one of Brazil’s most observed launches in the coming months

The Sealion 05 was introduced by BYD as an update to a mid-size SUV with a clear proposal to combine competitive price, high range, and more technology to regain strength in the Chinese market. Launched in China and expected to arrive in Brazil in 2026, the model appears in two main configurations, the plug-in hybrid DM-i and the all-electric EV, with significant improvements in performance, range, and equipment.

According to Auto & Técnica, the new Sealion 05 stands out because it brings together very strong numbers for the segment. In the plug-in hybrid version, the SUV can achieve a combined range of 2,105 km with a full tank and charged battery, in addition to recording fuel consumption of approximately 32 km/l when the battery charge is low. The electric version, on the other hand, delivers up to 630 km of range, fast charging, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds in the most powerful configuration.

What the Sealion 05 represents for BYD’s strategy

The update of the Sealion 05 did not happen by chance. According to the submitted data, the previous model, which had sold very well in 2025, delivered only 8,675 units in the first quarter of this year in China, with a drop of over 60% compared to the previous quarter. The brand’s reaction was quick and followed a direct formula: more car, more technology, and lower price.

This move helps explain why the Sealion 05 gained so much attention. BYD is trying to strengthen its Ocean line and maintain its position as one of the most aggressive manufacturers in terms of price and technology in the Chinese hybrid and electric vehicle market. The SUV arrives to occupy a strategic space between the Yuan Plus and the Song Pro, targeting consumers who want high range without giving up equipment and visual appeal.

How the Sealion 05 plug-in hybrid delivers 2,105 km of range

BYD's Sealion 05 combines high range, debuts in China, and is a strong bet as an SUV that could shake up the Brazilian market.

The Sealion 05 DM-i version is the most impressive in terms of range figures. According to the data, it can reach 2,105 km in the CLTC cycle with a full tank and fully charged battery. When the battery is low, fuel consumption is around 32.2 km/l of gasoline, thanks to BYD’s fifth-generation hybrid system.

This setup combines a 99 hp 1.5 naturally aspirated gasoline engine, which primarily acts as a generator, with a 161 hp electric motor, responsible for moving the vehicle in most situations. The model features front-wheel drive, a 65-liter tank, and 26.6 kWh or 34.3 kWh LFP batteries, which allow for a purely electric range of 220 km or 305 km, depending on the version.

What changes in the electric version of the Sealion 05

BYD's Sealion 05 combines high range, debuts in China, and is a strong bet as an SUV that could shake up the Brazilian market.

The Sealion 05 EV follows a different proposal, aimed at those who want an all-electric SUV with more power and greater range without relying on a combustion engine. It uses BYD’s second-generation Blade battery and is available with 57.5 kWh or 68.5 kWh, allowing a range of 540 km to 630 km in the CLTC cycle.

In terms of mechanics, the electric SUV has a single motor on the rear axle, with two power options, 268 hp or 322 hp in the top-of-the-line version. Its performance is also noteworthy, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Another highlight is its fast charging, as, according to the brand, five minutes of charging are enough to recover a large part of the new battery’s energy.

The numbers that explain why the Sealion 05 became a highlight

The Sealion 05‘s data places the model at a very competitive level within the segment. In China, the plug-in hybrid version starts at US$ 16,882 and goes up to US$ 22,000, while the electric version starts at US$ 20,600 and reaches US$ 25,100.

Furthermore, the SUV combines medium compact model dimensions with good interior space. It measures 4,620 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, 1,630 mm in height, and has a 2,770 mm wheelbase. The hybrid’s trunk offers 650 liters, while the electric version provides 600 liters, but adds another 110 liters in the front compartment.

Onboard technology and driver assistance gain importance

Sealion 05 from BYD combines high autonomy, debuts in China, and makes a strong bet as an SUV that can shake up the Brazilian market.

The Sealion 05 heavily invests in the onboard experience. The interior features a 12.8-inch central screen, which can reach 15.6 inches in the more complete versions, in addition to an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a gear selector mounted on the steering column. This choice frees up the center console for a 50W dual wireless charger, a refrigerated compartment, and physical buttons for car functions.

For safety and assistance, the model comes with seven standard airbags and, in the more complete configurations, the ADAS system God’s Eye C, described by BYD as an advanced assisted driving package. There is also a LiDAR option, which unlocks the superior level God’s Eye B, with capabilities aimed at autonomous driving in urban environments according to the brand’s proposal.

What the visual design and suspension say about the SUV’s proposal

In terms of design, the Sealion 05 follows BYD’s Ocean visual language, with proportion adjustments and a more modern and intelligent cockpit. The proposal is clear: to convey a technological image without abandoning the practicality of an SUV designed for daily use.

The more complete versions also include the DiSus-C adaptive suspension, reinforcing BYD’s attempt to deliver not only range and performance but also more dynamic refinement. This helps the Sealion 05 not rely solely on a low price to attract attention, but also on a more complete and competitive package.

Why the Sealion 05 could shake up the Brazilian market

Nothing has been officially confirmed for Brazil, but sources state that the Sealion 05 is expected to arrive in the country in 2026. The expectation is that, here, it will be priced just under R$ 200,000, directly competing with models like the Leapmotor C10.

This point is important because it shows the SUV’s commercial potential. Even with taxes and local costs pushing up the final price, the Sealion 05 could arrive with a difficult-to-ignore balance of range, technology, and price, especially in a market that is increasingly opening up to Chinese plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.

What makes the Sealion 05 seem like such a strategic launch

The case of the Sealion 05 is noteworthy because it addresses several fronts simultaneously. BYD is trying to regain commercial momentum in China, expanding its Ocean line, strengthening its presence in hybrids and electric vehicles, and also preparing a product with international impact potential.

Full tank, charged battery, very high range, robust technological package, and aggressive pricing form a combination that helps explain why this SUV became a topic of discussion so quickly. More than just a facelift, the launch seems designed to show how BYD wants to continue gaining ground in different markets simultaneously.

Why it’s worth closely following the Sealion 05’s arrival

The Sealion 05 concentrates several of the strongest trends in the current automotive industry: electrification, high autonomy, more embedded technology, and price wars. When all this appears together in an SUV with a global proposal, the model naturally becomes a thermometer of what may happen in the market from now on.

If it arrives in Brazil with a truly competitive price, the Sealion 05 has the potential to strongly enter the conversation among the most desired electrified SUVs in its segment, especially for those who want to drive a lot without constantly depending on recharging or expensive refueling.

If the Sealion 05 lands in Brazil even below R$ 200,000, with all this autonomy and technology, could it become a game-changer among electrified SUVs, or will it still face obstacles like price, competition, and public trust?
